A Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department EMS crew member fell out of an ambulance today after a patient tried to leave the vehicle en route to St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
According to a spokesman for the Fire Department, crews were taking a 34-year-old man to the hospital after responding to a medical call in the 2300 block of Birch Drive. The man was having trouble breathing.
While going to St. Luke’s the patient became agitated, pulled the IV from his arm, removed his restraints and tried to leave the ambulance, the spokesman said.
The EMS unit then pulled over to the side of the road at 43rd and Jefferson in Kansas City, Mo.
The patient struggled with the paramedic and forced open the door, causing both the medic and the patient to fall out of the unit, according to the spokesman.
Another crew member helped to restrain the patient. A passing Kansas City, Mo., police officer saw what was happening and stopped to restrain the patient.
A Kansas City, Mo., EMS unit then transported the patient to the hospital.
The EMS crew member was evaluated at a local hospital and released back to duty with a minor abrasion to one knee, the spokesman said.
