Zoom, a KCK fire dog, has been nominated for the 2021 Aftermath K9 grant.
The winner of the grant will receive $5,000 for food, medical supplies, training equipment and training costs.
Zoom is competing with other fire and police department working canines in a seven-state region, based on votes online.
The 4-year-old male yellow Labrador retriever participates in search and rescue operations, finding live persons in a building collapse, natural disaster or manmade disaster. He can also do wide area searches for missing persons. Zoom is from the Ground Zero Emergency Training Center in Tuttle, Oklahoma.
Zoom’s handler is Mike Searcy. An agreement with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office allows Zoom to work for the KCK Fire Department. Zoom and Searcy may be called upon by the state for K9 search operations, when needed.
