A Wyandotte County jury on Friday convicted Bruce Thomas Shockley, 24, of Kansas City, Kan., of first-degree felony murder, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Shockley was accused of killing Melvin Lone outside his home on Dec. 16, 2014. The jury deliberated several hours before finding Shockley guilty as charged on all three counts.
Sentencing is set for Sept. 9, 2016. Shockley is expected to receive a life sentence.
Shockley killed Lone during a drive-by shooting in the early morning hours of Dec. 16, 2014. Shockley shot Lone with a rifle that he was prohibited from possessing as a result of his previous conviction, according to the district attorney’s office.
Lone was the father of Shockley’s ex-girlfriend, who also was at the home at the time.
Shockley was apprehended on Dec. 17, 2014, by members of the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Task Force.
The case was prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Jacob Fishman and Jennifer Tatum.
