Highways reopen near Atchison

Highways have reopened in the Atchison area after a shutdown earlier today because of a chemical spill.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, K-7 highway is now fully open.

Parts of Atchison had been evacuated following a chemical spill around 8 a.m. today at MGP plant that created a plume of gas over the city. Some residents had been told to shelter in place. According to officials, the danger is now over.

Early reports were that 18 people were treated for respiratory ailments, and are considered minor injuries. Atchison middle school, high school and Benedictine College were evacuated.
