Ozone alert also in effect
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Wyandotte County and the surrounding area until 8 p.m. Friday, June 18.
There will be dangerous heat today, according to the weather service.
Today’s high will be near 100 and the heat index will be about 105, according to the weather service. The temperature was 84 at 9 a.m.
The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, the weather service said.
Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors, the weather service said. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, the weather service said. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible, according to the weather service. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shade or air-conditioning.
The weather service said heat stroke is an emergency and people should call 911.
There is also an air quality alert in effect for Friday, June 18, according to the Mid-America Regional Council.
Ozone is expected to be the primary pollutant. People and businesses are urged to avoid activities that lead to ozone formation, including refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling idling vehicles unnecessarily and using gasoline-powered lawn equipment.
Positive activities include car pooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands and using water-based paints and cleaners.
MARC recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous activities when pollution levels are elevated.
Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible late Friday, in some areas of the region, according to the weather service.
Heat will continue into the weekend with temperatures in the low to mid 90s, the weather service said.

Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 75 with a south southwest wind of 10 mph, gusting as high as 18 mph.
Saturday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 94 and heat index values as high as 100, the weather service said. A south wind will be 6 to 8 mph.
Saturday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 75 and a south wind of 3 to 7 mph, according to the weather service.
Sunday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 95 and a south wind of 8 to 14 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph, the weather service said.
Sunday night, there will be a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 68, according to the weather service. New rainfall amounts may be between a tenth and quarter-inch.
Monday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 79, the weather service said.
Monday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 54, according to the weather service.
Tuesday, it will be sunny, with a high near 78, the weather service said.

Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 83, the weather service said.
