Heat advisory in effect this afternoon

A heat advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday, July 26, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures were 83 at noon Saturday, and were expected to climb to 95 degrees, with a heat index as high as 99 possible.
There also is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms in the forecast today. Some light rain has already fallen in Wyandotte County Saturday.

The weather service warned that those exposed to the heat and high humidity for a prolonged period could result in an increased risk to heat-related illnesses. Cars may reach lethal temperatures in minutes. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, the weather service said.

Residents are advised to drink plenty of water and stay in an air-conditioned room if possible.

Also, this afternoon there is a possibility of a thunderstorm, large hail and damaging winds, according to the weather service.

Expect temperatures to drop significantly on Sunday, when 87 degrees will be the high. Monday’s high will be 80 degrees.
