Dangerous heat will affect the area today with highs in the low to mid 90s, the National Weather Service said.
Wyandotte County is under a heat advisory from noon until 9 p.m. today, June 20, the weather service said.
Hot temperatures with humid conditions will yield heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees this afternoon and evening, according to the weather service.
Residents are advised that the dangerous heat and high humidity could result in an increased risk to heat-related illnesses. Cars may reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. The weather service advised never to leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
Residents also are advised to drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine, alcohol and high-sugar content beverages, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun, the weather service said. Also, residents should check on the elderly, neighbors and pets.
To reduce risk while working outdoors, take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments, the weather service said. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, and seek emergency assistance, calling 911 immediately, the weather service said.
Severe storms will be possible north of Interstate 70 tonight, as a weak cold front approaches from the north, the weather service said. The main threats with these storms will be large hail and damaging winds.
