Heat advisory continues today

A heat advisory and an air quality alert are in effect today for Wyandotte County.

The heat advisory runs through 9 p.m. July 30. Hot temperatures and high humidity coulc cause heat illnesses, the National Weather Service said.

Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Children and pets should not be left unattended.

Reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening, according to the weather service.

With a heat index of over 105 this afternoon, there is also an air quality alert in effect. People are urged to avoid any activities that lead to ozone formation, such as topping off when refueling vehicles or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment. People are encouraged to carpool.

Individuals should limit outdoor physical activity today.

The area may see a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms today and Friday.

Today, it will be sunny and hot, with a high near 98 and a heat index of 106, the weather service said. A west southwest wind of 6 to 9 mph is possible.

Tonight, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 76 and a south southwest wind of of 6 mph becoming calm after midnight, according to the weather service.

Friday, there is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10 a.m., then a slight chance of showers between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., the weather service said.

Friday night, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., with a low of 75, according to the weather service. A southwest wind will be around 6 mph.

Saturday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 88, the weather service said, and an east southeast wind of 5 to 7 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Saturday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 68, according to the weather service. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

Sunday, it will be sunny, with a high near 86, the weather service said.
