Harvesters is urging residents to donate food during September at several activities, including today at the Bonner Springs Price Chopper store.
The food bank in Kansas City, Mo., is holding a Fill the Fridge food drive today, sponsored by KSHB-TV, for perishable items. The food drive is at the store today at 501 S. Commercial Drive, Bonner Springs. The rest of the week, there will be different Price Chopper food drive locations in the Kansas City area.
This past weekend, the Renaissance Festival in Bonner Springs collected canned food donations for Harvesters.
Other drives during Hunger Action Month include:
– “Go Orange” by donating orange canned goods at a participating Price Chopper store;
Sept. 8: Hunger Action Day. Wear orange to show support for hunger relief. Take photos and post on Facebook or social media at #HungerActionDay.
– Sept. 10: Help assemble lunches during the “De Feet Hunger 5K and Packing Event.” The running community and 30 churches within the Heartland District of the United Methodist Church have joined together to support Harvesters—The Community Food Network’s “Give Lunch Program,” which provides lunches to kids who are missing meals. The De Feet Hunger 5k begins at 8 a.m. Following the race, there will be live entertainment, fellowship and hospitality to accompany runners as they help assemble lunches for Harvesters. – Sept. 11: National Day of Service—Volunteer at Harvesters in Kansas City as part of the National Day of Service. Unite with others to help feed the hungry in our community. Sign up to participate at www.harvesters.org/give-time. Volunteer hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
– Sept. 14: Learn about the relationship between nutritious food and health by attending Harvesters’ “Food 4 Thought – A Conversation about Hunger and Health with Community Thought Leaders” in Kansas City. The founders of the Food as Medicine Institute will share their research and book, Food as Medicine Everyday, with attendees.
