Maria Hansen is the first Kansas City Kansas Community College woman’s Jayhawk Conference soccer player of the week.
A 6-foot freshman from Copenhagen, Denmark, Hansen was named Goalkeeper of the Week for her outstanding play in the Lady Blue Devils’ 2-1 overtime win over Maple Woods. Hansen had six saves in the win and helped set up both KCKCC goals. Hansen first advanced the ball to Bonner Springs freshman Allie Ledbetter, who then crossed the ball to Piper’s Katie Trzok for KCKCC’s first goal. Hansen then advanced the ball up the left flank 40 yards which led to Trzok’s game-winning goal in overtime.
Earlier this season, Hansen posted a shutout against Lincoln College. “Division I talent, she could play any position on the field,” says KCKCC Coach Jeremy Winzer. “A very unselfish player, she will do anything to help this team win. She’s a real leader with her communication skills and the confidence she brings to the rest of the team.”
The Blue Devils will be trying to even their season’s record at 3-3 Tuesday when they play host to Garden City in a Jayhawk contest at 5:30 p.m. The game will be followed by a men’s game at 8 p.m.
