Girl drowns in Kansas River in Wyandotte County

An 11-year-old girl drowned about 3:33 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at I-435 and Woodend Avenue in Wyandotte County.

According to a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, a family was playing near a sand bar in the Kansas River when the drowning occurred.

A beach ball was hit and landed in a portion of the river where the current was moving rapidly and undertow was present, the spokesman stated.

An 11-year-old girl entered the water to get the ball, and was sucked under the water surface, police stated.

An adult and two juveniles went into the water to rescue the girl, but they also required rescue, the spokesman stated.

The female victim has not been located, and efforts have shifted from rescue to recovery, according to police.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department and Fire Department responded.

The incident is under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau. Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
