Freshmen lead Blue Devil golfers to 4th in Jayhawk tourney

Freshmen led the way as Kansas City Kansas Community College finished fourth in the second Jayhawk Conference designated tournament of the season.

Colby Unruh of Overland Park finished sixth and Carson Towey of Bishop Carroll placed 13th in the tournament won by Hutchinson at Crestview Country Club No. 2 in Wichita Monday and Tuesday.

Unruh had rounds of 74, 75 and 70 for a 319 total on the par 71, 6621-yard layout while Towey finished at 226 (75-78-73). Blake Mullen of Olathe East tied for 20th (77-77-70-233) and Dylan Freund was 22nd (80-79-76-235) to round out the Blue Devil scoring.

Other Blue Devil finishes included Mark Towey of Bishop Carroll, who was 30th (82-78-82-248); Keegan Ellington of Andover Central, 33rd (83-84-81-248); and Jacob Hall of Tonganoxie, who tied for 40th (87-93-88-268).

Hutchinson, which had medalist Charlie Crockett who finished 8-under par at 205, and two other top four finishers, easily took team honors at 854. Garden City was second at 885 followed by Dodge City, 905; KCKCC 913 (306-309-298); Barton County, 934; Fort Scott, 985; and Hesston, 1044.

The Blue Devils will face the same field next Monday and Tuesday in the Jayhawk championship tourney at Sand Creek Station in Newton before returning to Crestview for the NJCAA Division I district championship April 26-27.
