Sheriff’s patrol car catches fire after chase

Four suspects were captured near 33rd and Orville after a chase by a Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Department sergeant about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The sergeant was chasing a pickup truck that had been stolen, according to Capt. David Thaxton, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department. The white Ford F150 pickup truck crashed at 33rd and Orville.

The sergeant’s vehicle caught fire after he got out of it and left it parked at 33rd and Orville to chase the suspects, according to Capt. Thaxton. The sheriff’s patrol car was not in a wreck, he added. When the sergeant turned around, he saw that his car was on fire, Thaxton said.

Other sheriff’s and police officers responded to assist the sergeant. The four suspects were apprehended and are now in custody, Capt. Thaxton said. No one was injured, he added.

Frances Willard Elementary School is about a block west of the incident.
