Flooding continues in the Midwest today along the Missouri River. Now, also the Kansas River in Kansas City, Kansas, has risen to a point just under minor flooding.
The Missouri River is expected to reach moderate to major flood crests soon in towns along the river, according to the National Weather Service. Additional water is being released into the Missouri River upstream from the reservoir at Gavins Point, South Dakota.
The weather service has issued a flood warning for the Missouri River at Kansas City from Monday afternoon, March 18, through Saturday, March 23. Minor flooding is forecast. Flood stage is 32 feet.
According to current hydrology charts, the Missouri River at Kansas City was at 27.97 feet at 8:30 a.m. March 15. Flood stage is 32 feet. The Missouri River at Kansas City is currently projected to go into the action stage on Sunday morning, and into the minor flood stage on Monday, going back to action stage on Friday, March 22, according to hydrology charts.
The Kansas River at 23rd Street in Kansas City, Kansas, has now gone into the action stage, at 29.52 feet at 7:45 a.m. Friday, March 15, according to hydrology charts. Flood stage is 33 feet. The Kaw River is projected to remain in action stage through Tuesday, March 19.
The Missouri River at Parkville, Missouri, is currently at 27.19 feet on Friday, March 15, and flood stage there is 25 feet. The river is in the minor flood stage at Parkville, and is projected to go into moderate flood stage on Saturday, remaining in moderate flood stage until Sunday, March 24.
At 32.5 feet, the Wolcott Levee, sections 1 and 3, in northwestern Wyandotte County will be overtopped, according to the weather service. At 32 feet, the Wolcott Levee, section 2, in northwestern Wyandotte County will be overtopped.
Turkey Creek at Southwest Boulevard is not projected to flood at this time.
Motorists who encounter flooded roadways should turn around, and go back, the weather service stated.
The Wyandotte County weather forecast does not show another chance of rain until Tuesday night.
Today, it will be sunny with a high near 48 and a northwest wind of 9 to 16 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph, the weather service said.
Tonight, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 27 and a northwest wind of 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the evening, according to the weather service.
Saturday, it will be sunny with a high near 54 and a light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon, the weather service said.
Saturday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 30 and a north northwest wind of 6 mph, according to the weather service.
Sunday, it will be sunny with a high near 53 and a north northwest wind of 5 to 7 mph, the weather service said.
