Flood advisory in effect

With heavy rains falling in Wyandotte County about 7:40 p.m., a flood advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service until 10 p.m. today.

Rainfall may cause urban and small stream flooding in the area, the weather service said.

Also under the advisory are neighboring areas such as St. Joseph, Mo., Leavenworth, Kan., Liberty, Mo., Gladstone, Mo., Lansing, Kan., Excelsior Springs, Mo., Cameron, Mo., Smithville, Mo., Kearney, Mo., Parkville, Mo., Tonganoxie, Kan., Platte City, Mo., Basehor, Kan., North Kansas City, Mo., Riverside, Mo., Lawson, Mo., Plattsburg, Mo., and Lathrop, Mo.

The weather service advised drivers to turn around when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

A flash flood warning also is in effect in Wyandotte County from 7:52 p.m. until 1:45 a.m. Aug. 27, according to the weather service.

A tornado watch remains in effect here through 10 p.m. Aug. 26.
