Kansas City Kansas Community College’s women’s soccer team combined a near flawless defense with two second half goals for the Lady Blue Devils’ first win of the season at Lincoln Saturday.
The 2-0 shutout evened the Blue Devils’ record at 1-1 heading into a home contest with Maple Woods Thursday at 2 p.m.
Defensively, the Blue Devils gave up just three shots and only one on goal as freshman goalkeeper Maria Hansen posted her first career shutout.
Limited to just two shots on goal the first half, KCKCC scored twice in less than two minutes early in the second half for the win.
Letica Ramos put the Blue Devils in front when she took a corner shot from Katie Trzok and banged it home for KCKCC’s first goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, sophomore Madison Simmons made it 2-0 on an assist from Loida Carranza, who beat the Lincoln keeper to a ball served up from 40 yards out by Chase Holle.
Ramos’ goal came after she stepped in for sophomore Cynthia Conchas.
“Her goal was very deserving,” said KCKCC coach Jeremy Winzer. “Her goal symbolized what I want our opponents to think about us when we step on the field and what our players like to describe as ‘just putting in the grind.’ ”
“I was shocked and once I saw it go in, I was very excited,” said Ramos, described by assistant coach Melanie Pickert as “that person who is just always in the right spot.”
As for Simmons’ goal, Winzer said: “With six shots on goal, Madison was due for a goal. I think the timing was right and this will help her continue in her ability to attack as we get closer to conference play.”
