A flash flood watch has been issued for Wyandotte County from 7 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
An initial round of thunderstorms is expected to push into eastern Kansas and western Missouri this evening.
The most intense portions of the storms will be moving quickly eastward. However, locations could still receive 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period, according to the weather service.
An additional round of thunderstorms producing heavy rain will greatly increase the flash flood threat during the overnight and early morning hours, according to the weather service.
Flood potential will persist into Thursday as more storms affect the watch area through Thursday evening.
Surrounding counties also are under a flash flood watch.
Residents are asked to monitor weather forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
The weather service also said severe weather is expected this evening across the entire outlook area. Damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes are possible, the weather service said.
