The cause of a fire at a single-family home at 3057 S. 23rd Circle about 1:50 a.m. today is under investigation, a Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department spokesman said.
The resident of the home told firefighters he had an electrical issue one hour before the fire, and the master breaker had been turned off, according to the spokesman.
Smoke detectors were not working at the home, according to the report.
Crews arrived at the fire, within 4 minutes of the report. A person living at the home had self-evacuated, the spokesman said.
Firefighters first observed the fire coming through the roof of the one-story wood-framed building, according to the spokesman.
Heavy fire was located in the attic. Crews had to evacuate when the roof started to collapse, the spokesman said. Then an interior attack was continued after the roof collapse, according to the spokesman.
The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes, fire officials said.
The Fire Department estimated the damage to property and contents at $35,000. The pre-fire value of the home was $70,000.
