Extreme cold will move into the area for the holiday weekend with highs in the single digits and lows in the single digits to teens below zero on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s morning, according to the National Weather Service.
While it will be a little warmer today, the very cold temperatures will return on the weekend.
Wind chill values on New Year’s Eve will drop to 15 to 30 degrees below zero, the weather service said.
Frostbite and hypothermia can happen in a matter of less than 30 minutes in those temperatures, according to the weather service.
Light snow or freezing drizzle may be possible Saturday night, the weather service said. Any snow accumulations would be minor, but even a small amount of freezing drizzle will make roads slick, according to the weather service.
Today, it will be cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 31, the weather service said. A south wind of 6 mph will become light and variable in the afternoon.
Tonight, the low will be 15 with mostly cloudy skies, according to the weather service, and a light and variable wind.
Friday, it will be mostly cloudy with a high near 31, the weather service said. A light and variable wind will become southeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning.
Friday night, it will be cloudy with a low of 11, according to the weather service, and a north wind of 5 to 9 mph.
Saturday, expect a high of 11 with mostly cloudy skies, the weather service said. A north northeast wind will be around 8 mph.
Saturday night, there is a 20 percent chance of snow after midnight, with a low around minus 1, according to the weather service.
Sunday, expect partly sunny and cold weather, with a high near 6, the weather service said.
On Sunday night, New Year’s Eve, it will be partly cloudy with a low of minus 8, according to the weather service.
On Monday, New Year’s Day, it will be sunny and cold, with a high near 8, the weather service said.
On Monday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of minus 1, according to the weather service.
Tuesday, it will be sunny with a high near 22, the weather service said.
Tuesday night, it will be partly cloudy with a low of 11, according to the weather service.
Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 22, the weather service said.
