A transformer exploded around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at the Quindaro Power Plant, according to the Board of Public Utilities spokesman.
A fire in connection with the transformer explosion is now out, said David Mehlhaff, BPU spokesman. Because the transformer exploded a little distance from the Quindaro Power Plant, there was no damage to the power plant itself, he added. The power plant is at 3601 N. 12th, Kansas City, Kan.
The explosion knocked out power to more than 600 customers, the spokesman said. There were no injuries, Mehlhaff said.
The 69 KV transformer that exploded also took out three of the 161 KV transmission lines, Mehlhaff stated.
Safety of the employees and community is the top priority of the BPU, he said.
More than 600 customers were without power, including Fairfax industries such as Owens Corning and General Motors. The GM plant is currently on a changeover this week and is not running this week.
Mehlhaff said electrical operation crews are working to isolate these issues and get power restored to customers as soon as possible.
