Excessive heat warning in effect today

An excessive heat warning is in effect today through Thursday in Wyandotte County and the surrounding area, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index today may be as high as 106. Today’s high will be near 96, and Wednesday’s weather will have a high near 97, the weather service said. Thursday, the high could be near 96.

Rain and storms are possible Wednesday and Thursday, according to the weather service. Temperatures will drop to a high near 90 on Friday.

The low temperatures today through Thursday will be in the upper 70s to near 80, according to the weather service. The temperature was 81 at 7 a.m. Tuesday, with a heat index of 84.

Residents are asked to be aware of dangerously hot conditions Tuesday through 11 p.m. Thursday.

The weather service said the heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors, according to the weather service. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Those who work or spend time outside should take extra precautions, rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening, the weather service said.

Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible, according to the weather service.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, the weather service said. Heat stroke is an emergency and 911 may be called.

Wyandotte County also is under an air quality alert for Tuesday morning because of particulate matter of 2.5 microns. The Mid-America Regional Council issued the alert.

MARC recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician.

Friday, there is a 40 percent chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1 p.m., the weather service said. The high will be near 90.

Friday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 72, according to the weather service.
