An excessive heat warning continues in Wyandotte County and the surrounding area until 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
Today the high will be near 97, with a heat index as high as 110, the weather service said.

Dangerously high temperatures and humidity could quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke if precautions are not taken, the weather service said. The very young, the elderly, those without air conditioning, and those participating in strenuous outdoor activities will be the most susceptible. Also, car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Heat illnesses are possible. Residents are advised to stay in air-conditioned rooms, drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors, the weather service said.
Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, according to the weather service. Drivers should always check the back seat before exiting their vehicle.
