Driver dies in three-vehicle accident on bridge

A driver died in an accident about 7:24 a.m. Monday, July 20, on the 7th Street Bridge over the Kansas River, a police spokesman stated.

When police officers arrived after being dispatched, they discovered three involved vehicles and a fatality, according to the spokesman.

The bridge was closed down while the accident was investigated.

Initial reports showed that a vehicle traveling northbound on 7th Street crossed the center line, striking a southbound vehicle and then a second southbound vehicle, according to the police spokesman.

The driver of the first southbound vehicle, a male in his late 20s or early 30s, was deceased upon arrival, the spokesman stated.

His passenger and the driver of the second vehicle did not sustain injuries, police reported.

The driver of the northbound vehicle fled, police stated.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Traffic Control Unit and Criminal Investigations Bureau is investigating the case.
