Driver dies in accident near I-435 and I-70

A 35-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man died in an accident at 7:35 p.m. Sunday, June 12, near I-435 and I-70, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report.

Seven other people were injured in the accident, according to the trooper’s report.

A GMC Envoy was southbound on I-435 about a half-mile west of I-70 when it took the southbound I-435 ramp to eastbound I-70, according to the trooper’s report.

The Envoy was traveling too fast for the natural curve and lost control, over-corrected and rolled multiple times on the right shoulder and right ditch, the trooper’s report stated. Six of the eight occupants were ejected from the vehicle, according to the trooper’s report.

The driver, Wilfredo Lopez Cartagena, 35, of Kansas City, Kansas, was killed in the accident, the trooper’s report stated.

A 25-year-old male resident of Kansas City, Kansas, had a possible serious injury, but declined being taken to the hospital, the report stated.

A 15-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, girl had a possible serious injury and was taken to the hospital, according to the trooper’s report.

A 2-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, girl had a possible serious injury and was taken to a hospital, the trooper’s report stated.

A 21-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man had a possible serious injury and was taken to a hospital, according to the trooper’s report.

A 25-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman had a possible serious injury and was taken to the hospital, the trooper’s report stated.

A 33-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman had a possible serious injury and was taken to the hospital, according to the trooper’s report.

A 10-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, boy had a possible serious injury and was taken to the hospital, the trooper’s report stated.

According to the trooper’s report, only two of the eight persons in the vehicle had been wearing a safety restraint.
