Downtown KCK district to get a slight tax reduction

The Downtown Kansas City, Kansas, Self-Supporting Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) will see its property tax rate decline from the current 12.635 mills to 11.0257 mills in 2019, Unified Government officials said.

The reduction in the SSMID’s mill levy rate was approved on Thursday night by the Unified Government Commission.

The downtown district property owners pay this tax in addition to other property taxes to provide funding for security and cleanliness.

Debbie Jonscher of the UG Finance Department said the UG in the past year contributed $100,000 to the SSMID, and this year, the SSMID requested an additional $25,000.

The total $125,000 was approved at the Thursday night meeting, she said. That allowed the SSMID’s mill levy to decrease slightly.
