Demolition work on old Platte Purchase bridge scheduled Monday

More demolition work in connection with the old Platte Purchase bridge spanning Platte and Wyandotte counties is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 9.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, crews will temporarily close all northbound and southbound lanes of the new U.S. 69 Missouri River Bridge from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, for demolition work. The final portion of the old Platte Purchase Bridge will be detonated. All work will depend on the weather.

Southbound U.S. 69 will be closed at I-635 and northbound U.S. 69 will be closed at Kindleberger Road, according to MoDOT. Motorists will need to find an alternate route.

The E.H. Young Riverfront Park has been designated as a safe viewing area for the bridge demolition.

A new U.S. 69 bridge over the Missouri River has been built in place of the Platte Purchase bridge, and it includes multiple lanes, with bike and pedestrian access. This project is shared by the Kansas Department of Transportation and MoDOT, a spokesman said.
