Death investigation underway at jail

A death investigation is underway at the Wyandotte County jail, where an inmate was found unresponsive and later pronounced deceased on Monday, Feb. 14.

The inmate was found about 1:05 p.m. Feb. 14, while routine cell checks were being conducted, according to Capt. Kyle Harvey of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office.

At this time, a preliminary investigation has indicated no foul play is suspected, according to Capt. Harvey.

After the inmate was found unresponsive, life-saving efforts were performed, and emergency services called, the spokesman stated. The Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department responded to take over life-saving efforts. The inmate was pronounced deceased in the facility, Capt. Harvey said.

Capt. Harvey said more detailed information about the inmate, including the inmate’s name and the cause of death, will be announced in the future.

An autopsy is planned, he said. The Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are currently investigating the case, he added.
