The state deadlines for motor vehicle registrations and renewal have been extended, according to local officials.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed Executive Order 20-49 on June 30, which extended parts of the state of emergency executive order. The state of emergency, which was set to expire on June 30, has been extended to Sept. 15.
With this order, the registration deadline for new vehicles acquired in 2020 has been extended until Nov. 14, officials stated. Renewal registrations for the months of March through June have also been extended through Nov. 14.
This is welcome news for drivers who have been unable to complete their registration and renewals, according to local officials.
The Unified Government Treasury Office was closed to the public for an 11-week period from late May through early June due to the COVID 19 virus. In addition, like many other Unified Government offices, the Treasury Office has dealt with staffing limitations resulting from government-wide furloughs in June and July, according to officials. These events, coupled together, have created a significant backlog of work from residences needing motor vehicle service.
In June, the Treasury office reopened the Annex Office at 8200 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, for motor vehicle title work only. For all motor vehicle work not related to titles, the public is still required to continue to use online, drop off, or mail-in options only.
The downtown courthouse office, 710 N. 7th St., Suite 240, Kansas City,Kansas, is open to the public exclusively for the real estate, personal property, and Treasury services.
To reduce crowding, those electing to complete title work at the annex are highly encouraged to obtain a spot in the online queue before arriving on location, a spokesman stated. Individuals will receive an estimated time to be served via text message notifications, and individuals will not be allowed in the building until the number is about to be called. To save a spot in line, visit wycokck.org/auto. For safety, arriving far in advance of the doors opening is highly discouraged.
“While the office is open, social distancing still limits the services that can be provided in our facilities. I highly recommend everyone to first use our various online, drop off, or mail-in options for all their motor vehicle, real estate tax, and personal property Ttax payment needs,” stated Richard Mikesic, Treasurer. “Our current backlog of work is estimated to number nearly 22,000 transactions. Obtaining a required spot in line to complete the work in the office has proven to be very challenging. For most people, this can be avoided using our other options. I cannot stress enough the benefits of trying these other options before deciding to physically come into the office.”
Annual registration
In order to renew annual registration, please submit the payment online at mywyco.wycokck.org or through the MyWyco App available for both iPhone and Android devices. Those who are not able to make a payment online, will be required to submit the registration renewal as follows:
1) Place the payment in the Treasurer Drop Box located at the Annex, 8200 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.
2) Mail the payment to the Courthouse Office at 710 N. 7th St., Suite 240 Kansas City, Kansas 66101.
Title work
Title work on a newly acquired vehicle can still be processed without coming into the office. To get started, visit wycokck.org/auto and select “Click here to initiate a request to title your recently purchased vehicle: Request a ugdmv-title.”
Temporary tags
Treasury provides the opportunity to acquire temporary tags through email. To start this process, send an email to [email protected].
Handicapped placard
To acquire a handicapped placard, submit the placard Self Certification Form (found at https://www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/tr159a.pdf) as follows:
1) Place the application in the Treasurer Drop Box located at the Annex, 8200 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.
2) Mail the application to the Courthouse Office at 710 N. 7th St., Suite 240 Kansas City, Kansas 66101
Real estate and personal property
To submit your real estate or personal property payment online, visit mywyco.wycokck.org or use the MyWyco App available for both iPhone and Android devices. If not able to make your payment online, there are two options:
1) Place the payment in the Treasurer Drop Box located at the Annex, 8200 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.
2) Mail the payment to the Courthouse Office at 710 N. 7th St., Suite 240, Kansas City, Kansas 66101.

The governor’s Executive Order 20-49 also extends the deadline to renew driver’s licenses to Nov. 14. Driver’s license services are provided by the state of Kansas. For information related to obtaining or renewing a driver’s license, visit ksrevenue.org/reopening.

However, the phone lines and incoming email inquiries are experiencing extremely heavy volumes, so delays should be expected, according to a spokesman.
The State Ave location is serving 50 people a day for the ENTIRE county. This is negligently derelict to not have secured alternative methods of service for the tax paying public. Instead of furloughing essential workers, start firing agency heads for mismanaging departments and not adequately preparing and initiating remedial efforts to sustain day to day business. It’s time to make everyone be responsible. By the end of this year, any expired tags need to be ticketed. It’s a responsibility not a choice. I lost my job so don’t start talking about COVID and lost wages. Our was due so we paid it. These 60 day tags that are now months old…..when you bought the car you knew the cost of tagging it. If that was gonna be an issue then purchase something else. I’m not oblivious to money problems but come on. When will the right time be? Let’s keep Wyandotte County respectable.
