Temperatures at 9 a.m. New Year’s Day were minus 5, with a wind chill reading of minus 18 in Wyandotte County, according to the National Weather Service.
A wind chill warning remains in effect until noon today, the weather service said. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur quickly, in as little as 30 minutes or less, according to the weather service.
Staying indoors is recommended, the weather service said. If going outside, persons should make sure they have appropriate clothing to cover the skin and an emergency kit with blankets in their vehicles.
A light breeze this morning dropped the wind chill values, then rising temperatures will bring the reading up 15 to 20 degrees this afternoon, the weather service said.

As temperatures drop to minus 4 Monday night into Tuesday, dangerous wind chill values will return, according to the weather service. In Wyandotte County they will be minus 7 to minus 12. Only the northern part of the region, near Iowa, will be under the wind chill warning tonight through Tuesday.
Temperatures will increase into the teens and 20s Tuesday afternoon with a trend of those similar high temperatures through Friday, the weather service said. Low temperatures will still drop down into the single digits and teens but the dangerous wind chills do not look to return.
Above freezing temperatures are expected to return this weekend along with some possible winter precipitation, although confidence is still low on any accumulations on Sunday, according to the weather service.
Tonight, it will be mostly clear with a low of minus 4, and wind chill values between minus 7 and minus 12, according to the weather service. There will be a light and variable wind.
Tuesday, it will be sunny with a high near 19, the weather service said. The wind chill will be minus 3 to 7. A calm wind will become southwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning.
Tuesday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 13, according to the weather service. A south southwest wind of 6 to 8 mph will become northwest after midnight.
Wednesday, it will be sunny with a high near 21, and a north northwest wind of 7 to 10 mph, the weather service said.
