Wyandotte County is under a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
About 1 to 3 inches of snow are possible in Wyandotte County and the Kansas City area, according to the weather service.
To the north of Kansas City, near St. Joseph, Missouri, 3 to 7 inches of snow are possible on Sunday, the weather service said.
In addition to the snow, strong winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow, causing whiteout conditions, the weather service said.
The weather service advised residents to avoid travel on Sunday, and if traveling for the holiday, consider leaving Saturday or waiting until Monday.
Forecasters are now certain of the snow in the forecast for Sunday, according to the weather service.
There is a contrast in today’s fall-like weather and Sunday’s prediction of snow. Today, the high will be near 63 with a light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon, the weather service said.
Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of rain after 3 a.m., with a low of 34 and an east wind of 7 to 16 mph, becoming north northeast after midnight, according to the weather service. Winds may gust as high as 28 mph.
Sunday, there will be a 90 percent chance of precipitation. There will be rain before 7 a.m., then rain and snow between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., followed by snow after 8 a.m., the weather service said. Patchy, blowing snow is possible between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The temperature will fall to about 28 by 5 p.m. It will be breezy, with a north northwest wind of 17 to 23 mph, gusting as high as 39 mph. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is possible.
Sunday night, it will be mostly cloudy, then gradually clearing, with a low of 19, according to the weather service. A northwest wind of 7 to 17 mph will gust as high as 24 mph.
Monday, it will be sunny with a high near 37 and a west northwest wind around 7 mph, the weather service said.
Monday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 20, according to the weather service.
Tuesday, it will be sunny with a high near 36, the weather service said.
Tuesday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 20, according to the weather service.
Wednesday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 37, the weather service said.
Wednesday night, it will be mostly cloudy with a low of 24, according to the weather service.
Thursday, it will be partly sunny with a high near 44, the weather service said.
Thursday night, the low will be around 32 with mostly cloudy skies, according to the weather service.
