The Kansas Department of Transportation will be treating the highways for ice, as there is a concern about moisture refreezing overnight, stated a KDOT spokeswoman.
Bridges and overpasses would be expected to freeze first, and they will be the priority for the crews, the KDOT spokeswoman stated.
“We ask drivers to expect ice tomorrow morning, plan ahead and allow extra time,” the spokeswoman stated.
The Unified Government will monitor the snowfall through the rest of the day and into the morning hours to check for accumulation, according to Edwin Birch, UG spokesman.
Currently, the UG has been informed that temperatures are expected to remain above freezing until after midnight, he stated.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Wyandotte County until 10 p.m. tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service reported that the temperature was 34 degrees at 4 p.m. Thursday. The weather service forecast showed temperatures dipping to 32 degrees at midnight. Most of Friday, except for about four hours at midday, could be below freezing.
The streets will be monitored to see if they need to be treated later tonight, the UG spokesman added.
