Program offered on raising safe kids

Special KCK school board meeting to be Feb. 1
A special meeting of the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Central Office and Training Center, superintendent’s conference room on the third floor, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. The purpose of the meeting is to take action on a request for overnight student travel, and to recess into a closed session to discuss nonelected personnel matters, according to a meeting notice from the district.
NAACP to meet Feb. 2
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Bethany Medical Building, 2nd floor meeting room, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan. Pregnancy and infant loss support group to meet
A facilitated support group for family members who have recently, or some time ago, experienced the loss of miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss will meet on the first Tuesday of each month. Learn ‘The Art of Bonsai’ at Feb. 4 program
“The Art of Bonsai,” a class, will be presented from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, Sunflower Room, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. Dexter White, Wyandotte County Extension master gardener, will present the program. Bonsai is a Japanese art form using miniature trees to grow in containers. Library plans Harry Potter book night
The West Wyandotte Branch Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., plans a Harry Potter book night at 6 p.m. Feb. 4. Themed snacks and activities are planned for those who are in third grade through 12th grade.
Black History and Scholarship Banquet to be Feb. 6
The 24th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The keynote speaker will be State Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau, D-29th Dist. Sen. Faust-Goudeau was the first black woman to serve in the Kansas Senate. The event begins with a social hour at 5 p.m. Also, there will be an after-dinner dance at 8 p.m. The host of the event will be Cynthia Newsome, KSHB-TV news anchor. There will be live entertainment by KC Jazz and a poetry reading by Larry Guidry. Pre-registration is encouraged. Tickets are $45 per person. Police chief scheduled to speak Feb. 9 at LRA meeting
Kansas City, Kan., Police Chief Terry Zeigler is scheduled to speak at the Feb. 9 meeting of the Leavenworth Road Association. The meeting will start with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 followed by the program at 7 p.m. at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd. A chicken casserole will be provided, with those attending bringing side dishes.

Storm spotter training offered
A storm spotter training and severe weather seminar will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The seminar is offered by the Wyandotte County Emergency Management office and will feature a meteorologist from the National Weather Service office in Pleasant Hill, Mo. A poetry event is planned at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The event is in conjunction with Black History Month. The presenter and poetry reader will be Sheri “Purpose” Hall, an area poet.
