Volunteers needed to teach English
The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., needs volunteers to teach English. Volunteers may devote 1.5 hours each week, which varies with the volunteer’s schedule. Materials and training are provided. Classes are held at library locations convenient for teacher and student. Grinter Place to hold Holidays with the Arts on Dec. 12
From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, Grinter Place will offer Holidays with the Arts. Local artists and authors will display their pictures , paintings and books available for purchase. The Kansas City Kansas Community College Orchestra is scheduled to perform while visitors tour the house and participate in a treasure hunt. The holiday gift shop will be open to browse and purchase gifts and baked goods. The Wine Barn will be the host for a wine tasting during the Holidays with the Arts, and mulled cider, cheese and crackers also will be served. The cost of attending the Dec. 12 program will be $6 per person or two for $10. The two programs are sponsored by Grinter Place and the Grinter Place Friends. Funds raised will go toward support and operation of programs for Grinter House. Santa visits Ag Hall
December events at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 126th and State, Bonner Springs, include kids getting their pictures taken with Santa in the train depot and riding the train at the Ag Hall. Library workshop to guide writers in finding own ‘inner trickster’
Denise Low, former Kansas Poet Laureate and retired humanities professor at Haskell Indian Nations University, will read from her book of stories, “Jackalope,” and conduct a short workshop, guiding writers in finding their “inner tricksters,” on Dec. 14. The program and workshop will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Low will conduct a fun writing exercise to finding their own “inner tricksters.” In the tradition of the Jackalope, Coyote, Brer Rabbit and Bugs Bunny, the tricksters, according to Low, are one’s own mischievous subconscious, causing change. Low has won two Pushcart Prize nominations for her fiction. Her most recent book is “Jackalope,” published by Red Mountain Press. She blogs, reviews and co-publishes Mammoth Publications. Her workshops have national reach, and she teaches at Baker University.

Rosedale group to hold annual meeting Dec. 22
The Rosedale Development Association will hold its annual meeting from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 22 at 1403 Southwest Blvd., Kansas City, Kan. At the annual meeting, the results of the Rosedale Community Survey, sent to more than 5,000 households and completed by more than 800 Rosedale residents, will be announced. Legislators to hold community forum Jan. 5 at library
The Wyandotte County Legislative Delegation will hold a community forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the West Wyandotte Branch Library, community room, 1737 N. 82nd, Kansas City, Kan. The public may attend and discuss legislative issues with the local legislators before this year’s legislative session starts. Legislators plan to return to Topeka to start the session on Monday, Jan. 11.
Eagle Days planned Jan. 23-24 at Wyandotte County Lake
The 15th annual Eagle Days event is planned Jan. 23-24 at Wyandotte County Lake. The event will be held at two locations, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library at the lake; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at Davis Hall at the lake. Birds of prey presentations will be held at both locations. Those presentations are at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m on Saturday, and 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Operation Wildlife will have live birds of prey on exhibit, including owls, hawks, falcons and eagles, and will give presentations that talk about the birds and their natural history. There will be crafts for kids, and eagle and waterfowl viewing over the lake. The event is free and open to the public.
