American GI Forum program planned
The American GI Forum series, “Justice for My People,” will continue from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the South Branch Library, Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kan. A presentation will be given by Rudy Padilla about Dr. Hector P. Garcia, Mexican refugee, medical doctor to the barrios, decorated war veteran, civil rights activist and presidential confidante – who brought attention to the Mexican-American civil rights movement.
Bishop Ward presents play
Bishop Ward High School is presenting the fall play production of “I Hate Shakespeare!” by Steph DeFerie. The audience will get a rip-roaring rundown of Shakespeare’s classics. With zombies, talking cows, and an appearance by someone playing Jerry Springer, “I Hate Shakespeare!” is a hilarious and fast-paced introduction to Shakespeare with a modern twist. Bishop Ward will present the production at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Willard L. Phillips Memorial Auditorium at the high school, 708 N. 18th. Tickets are $7 for adults, and $5 for students. Children under 6, clergy, and seniors 65 and older are admitted for free.
Piper offers ‘Sound of Music’ performance
Piper High School will present its fall musical performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Piper High School auditorium, 4400 N. 107th, Kansas City, Kan. “The Sound of Music” will be presented. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.

UG Mayor-CEO Mark Holland will ask residents in small groups to talk about how they would want to spend a sales tax windfall of about $12 million a year expected to occur when the STAR bonds are paid off at The Legends Outlets.
Central Avenue area road improvement projects to be discussed Nov. 18
Two Unified Government projects in the Central Avenue area will be discussed at an informal open house from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Bethany Community Center, 1120 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. People may drop in to see plans and discuss projects with engineers. On display will be preliminary designs for road resurfacing, handicapped ramp construction and traffic signal updates from 17th Street to I-70; and improvements to the 18th Street and Central Avenue intersection, including the closure of Park Drive, traffic signal replacement and handicapped ramp construction. The meeting is open to the public.

Fall book sale planned Nov. 19-21 in Bonner Springs
The fall book sale at the Bonner Springs Library is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19, to Saturday, Nov. 21. Hours are 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The sale room is in the basement storm shelter, which can be reached from the parking lot at the rear of the building at 201 N. Nettleton, accessible from K 7. A variety of fiction and nonfiction in a number of categories is available and nothing costs more than $1 with many items available for less and daily bargains such as buy two in a category, get one free. The sale features a large selection of children’s and teen books that will be selling for $1 a bag. Lovers of westerns, science fiction or romance will find much to their liking along with works by favorite authors as well as intriguing titles that beg to be read. Income from the sale and that from the kiosk which is located in the main library, and both staffed by the Friends of the Library group, is used for the library’s benefit. The most recent purchase is the electronic bulletin board which is mounted close to the check out desk and publicizes not only library happenings but goings-on in the community as well.
Sebelius to speak at United Way of Wyandotte County annual luncheon Nov. 20
Former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will speak at the annual luncheon Nov. 20 of the United Way of Wyandotte County. Sebelius also is the former U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services. “Looking Forward: Improving Health and Quality of Life in Wyandotte County,” is the topic. The luncheon will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Reardon Convention Center, 5th and Minnesota, Kansas City, Kan.
Mayor’s Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony planned Nov. 20
The Mayor’s Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony is planned Friday, Nov. 20, in downtown Kansas City, Kan. The free event kicks off in the evening near City Hall at 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. Hours of the event are 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the holiday lights turned on at 7:15 p.m. There will be visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, goodie bags for the first 1,000 kids, holiday movies, free popcorn, crafts and games for kids, local choirs, bands and dance groups, neighborhood group tree contest, and local food vendors selling refreshments.

Legends tree-lighting ceremony to be Nov. 21
