Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Mayor’s Listening Tour to be Sept. 8 at Piper High School
Mayor Mark Holland’s Listening Tour next will visit District 5 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Piper High School, 4400 N. 107th, Kansas City, Kan. Mayor Holland will make remarks, along with Commissioners Mike Kane, Melissa Bynum and Hal Walker, and then comments of residents will be heard in small discussion groups. The Listening Tour will gather information from residents on their priorities on countywide initiatives. It is based on the scheduled retirement of the sales tax revenue (STAR) bonds in 2017, which can result in the county receiving an additional $12 million a year, according to UG officials. United Way plans fall campaign kickoff at the golf course
The United Way of Wyandotte County is planning a fall campaign kickoff luncheon in conjunction with a golf tournament on Sept. 10 at Painted Hills Golf Course, 7101 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. The event begins with a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. followed by the golf tournament at 1:30 p.m. The cost of the luncheon is $20 per person or $150 for a table of eight persons. Those who play golf will pay $125 per person, which includes the luncheon, golf with cart, a Live United T-shirt and the awards reception. Fairfax Festival planned Sept. 10
The Fairfax Festival will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Kaw Point Park, 1400 Fairfax Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Day of free family fun planned with Library in the Park
The Kansas City, Kan., Public Library is holding its first outdoor festival, Library in the Park. It’s a day of free, family fun featuring live music, food, and activities. Library in the Park will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at Big Eleven Lake in Kansas City, Kan. Library in the Park is completely free and will include activities for all ages. The downtown festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with DashKCK, a 5K run-walk held by the Downtown Shareholders and Donnelly College.Starting at 10 a.m., there will be performances from local bands and dancers including Rosie’s Dance Academy, AY Musik, Trio Aztlan, and The Grisly Hand. Activities will include storytime, face painting, crafts, demonstrations of library digital collections, book recommendations, and more. Attendees will also get to visit the Mobile Library to sign up for a card and check out items. Library in the Park will also include a taco competition with local KCK taquerias Bonito Michoacan, Carniceria la Siete, Ninfa’s, and Con Sabor a Mexico. Renaissance Festival continues
The Renaissance Festival will continue Saturday, Sept. 12, near 126th and State in Bonner Springs. Gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, each festival day, rain or shine. The event is open weekends only. Highland Fling is the theme of the Sept. 12-13 events. Central Avenue Parade scheduled Sept. 12
The 39th annual Central Avenue Parade is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The parade will travel from 18th to 12th Street on Central Avenue. After the parade will be a festival with La Placita at Bethany Park, 1120 Central Ave., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food and family entertainment are planned.
Argentine Health Fair planned Sept. 12
The Argentine Health Fair will take place on Sept. 12 at Argentine Community Center, 2810 Metropolitan, Kansas City, Kan. The festival begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m. Saturday. At the health fair, there will be health screenings, community resources, a bounce house, face painting and other events. The health fair will take registration for free Zumba classes and other exercise programs, and free nutrition sessions. The health classes will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, starting on Sept. 14. The health fair is connected to the Healthy Argentine Program, sponsored by UG Parks and Recreation, Argentine Betterment Corp., and Argentine Neighborhood Development Association.
TedxWyandotte event to be Sept. 15
The TedxWyandotte event scheduled for Saturday at Kansas City Kansas Community College has been postponed and rescheduled. The event will now be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at KCKCC, 7250 State Ave. It will feature approximately six presenters speaking on the theme of “Breaking Through: Confronting the barriers that divide us and challenging ourselves to move beyond them.” Tickets already purchased will be valid for the new date in September. Blood drive scheduled Sept. 19
Blood donors to the American Red Cross during September will receive a free haircut coupon, according to a Red Cross spokesman. The Red Cross and Sports Clips Haircuts are working to encourage donations during September. Those who give blood between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30 will receive a coupon for a free haircut valid through Nov. 8, and the coupon will arrive through their email, according to the Red Cross. According to a Red Cross spokesman, donors of all blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative.
