Exhibit on Prohibition to visit Wyandotte County Museum
“Spirited: Prohibition in America,” a National Endowment for the Humanities traveling exhibition, will visit the Wyandotte County Museum from April 6 to May 25. The exhibit covers the history of Prohibition, which started in 1919 and continued 13 years. The museum is at 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs. Hours of the exhibit are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The museum is not expected to be open on Saturday, May 23. The exhibit is free to the public. Strawberry Hill Museum open on weekends
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., is open on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The admission charge is $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Special tours are available during the week for groups of 20 or more by calling 913-721-0081. Memorial Day service planned May 25 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens
Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, located on the grounds of the cemetery, 701 N. 94th St., in Kansas City, Kan. The event is free and open to the public. The service will bring cemetery associates and veterans organizations together to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The sheltered, outdoor service will include information about the significance and history of Memorial Day, a memorial wreath laid at the flagpole, a rifle salute, taps and bagpipes. American Legion Post 188 will also be providing flags for our nation’s veterans who are interred in Chapel Hill.
Memorial Day service planned May 25 in Bonner Springs
A Memorial Day service is planned at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, in Bonner Springs. Bonner Springs Mayor Jeff Harrington will be the master of ceremonies at the event. VFW Post 6401 will present the colors, perform the flag ceremony and perform a 21-gun salute. Others participating include Elaine Berg, taps; Alfred Ramirez, invocation and benediction; and Skyler Ochoa and the Bonner Springs High School Choir, national anthem and “God Bless America.”
KCK school board to meet May 26
The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at the Central Office, 2010 N. 59th, Kansas City, Kan.
Mayor’s listening tour to kick off May 26
Mayor Mark Holland’s listening tour will kick off at 5:30 p.m. May 26 at Northwest Middle School, 2400 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. The first stop on the listening tour is for District 1, which is represented by Commissioner Gayle Townsend. 1st District at-large Commissioner Melissa Bynum also is expected to attend this meeting. At these meetings in each district, the mayor will ask residents how they would like to spend the anticipated windfall that comes when the Village West sales tax revenue bonds are paid off in 2017. Bike and Bus the 105 event to be May 27
Bike and Bus the 105 is a community event where businesses and organizations along the Rosedale 105 bus route will offer giveaways to bicyclists and bus riders on May 27. The Rosedale Development Association staff and volunteers will be at a bus stop near Holy Name Catholic Schools near Southwest Boulevard and Iowa.
UG to hold three special meetings
The Unified Government has called three special meetings. The meetings will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at 4 p.m. Tuesday June 2, and at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the fifth floor meeting room, Suite 515, of City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kan. The CDBG Subcommittee will meet on Tuesday, June 2.

Rosedale Retro Run canceled, rescheduled for May 30
The Rosedale Retro Run, a 5k-fun run, has been canceled Saturday, May 9. It is being rescheduled for May 30. There also will be a community trail work day and a mountain bike jam. There will be a finish line party at Fisher Park. Race registration will be $20 per person in advance and $25 on the day of the race. Kids may participate for free. Classic car show planned
A Classic Car Cruise is planned from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at 500 Kindleberger Road, Kansas City, Kan. The event will be sponsored by the UAW Local 31.
Free summer movies offered June 2-4
Free family-friendly movies will be offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. at the Legends 14 Theatres in Kansas City, Kan. The free movie on June 2-4 will be “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit.” The movie is rated G. Doors open at 9 a.m., all ages may attend. Seating is limited to availability on a first-come-first-serve basis. The schedule is subject to change. Current feature films are not included in the free admission.

A swap meet is planned June 4-5 at the Kansas Speedway, I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kan. The event is open to the public. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 4 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 5. Items such as automotive parts, motorcycles, tools, antiques and other items are expected to be available at the swap meet.
Leavenworth Road Association, Parks and Rec plan fishing derby June 13
The Leavenworth Road Association and the Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department are planning a free kids’ fishing derby June 13 at the Wyandotte County Lake kids fishing pond, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Registration is at 7 a.m. The event is from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Trophy presentation is at 11:30 a.m. There will be free goodies bags, free hot dogs and free bait. The event is for ages 3 to 15. DAR chapter Medal of Honor Remembrance Service rescheduled
The Wyandot Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter’s Medal of Honor Remembrance Service originally planned at 10 a.m. June 13 at the Highland Park Cemetery, 4101 State Ave., will be rescheduled in September, according to an announcement. Three Civil War Medal of Honor recipients will be honored.
Free concert offered June 13 at Legends
The “Live at the Legends” concert series will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at The Legends Outlets, I-70 and I-435, Kansas City, Kan. Big Time Grain Company, a country and country rock band, will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Legends, near the courtyard fountain area in front of the theaters. The concert is free and open to the public. Other concert dates include June 20: Dino O’Dell and The Doo-Dads, children’s music; June 27: The Zeros, new wave 1980s; July 11: Red Guitar, transcendent melodic rock music; and July 18: Perpetual Change, 1980s and 1990s rock (with some hits from the 2000s).
