Strawberry Hill Museum reopens
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., has reopened on the weekends. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Money Smart Month event coming to KCK today
A Money Smart Month activity is coming to Kansas City, Kan., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave. The opening event of Money Smart Month is a free “Grow Your Money” event with keynote speaker, John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation Hope. Bryant also serves on President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans. Bryant is participating in the event as part of his national 150th Anniversary Freedman’s Bank Tour. He will discuss the story leading up to and about Freedman’s Bank and how it can inspire people and small businesses to fulfill their freedom of self-determination. The entire family is welcome to attend this free event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and there will be activities for all, a spokesman said. There will be on-site financial experts, a panel of local business owners sharing their tips for success, support youth through the Shark Tank Youth contest, and other family-friendly activities. Money Smart Month of Greater Kansas City is a community initiative led in part by The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Commerce Bank and CommunityAmerica Credit Union. More than 40 organizations including, banks, credit unions, and professional financial and social service organizations are participating in Money Smart Month, a financial education program, by holding free events, seminars and classes all focused on financial literacy. These events will provide useful information to consumers of all ages on topics such as savings tips, credit and debt management, budgeting, financial planning, tips to maximize insurance and health benefits, financial tips for small businesses and more. In addition, Spanish-language financial education classes will be offered.
Face painting workshop planned
A beginning face painting workshop is planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kan. Participants will learn about types of paints, brushes and other materials. The workshop is for ages 13 and up. There is a limit of 10 participants. Youth summit and talent show planned today
The Youth Summit and Talent Show is sponsored by the 3rd District Kansas African American Affairs Commission, in collaboration with several community partners. Pulitzer Prize winning author coming to Donnelly College April 6
Donnelly College faculty, staff and students will welcome best-selling author Sonia Nazario to campus on Monday, April 6. This year, all Donnelly freshmen read Nazario’s book, “Enrique’s Journey.” This will be Donnelly’s inaugural event in its new Sister Jerome Keeler Lecture Series established in part by the National Endowment for Humanities. Nazario, a veteran of the Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times, published “Enrique’s Journey” — an expansion of a six-part newspaper series from which she earned her Pulitzer -in 2006. The story follows a young Latin American boy and his journey to reunite with his parents in the United States. Nazario originally hails from Kansas. Exhibit on Prohibition to visit Wyandotte County Museum
“Spirited: Prohibition in America,” a National Endowment for the Humanities traveling exhibition, will visit the Wyandotte County Museum from April 6 to May 25. Household Hazardous Waste Collection day to be April 18
The next day for Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be April 18. The collection site at 2443 S. 88th St., Kansas City, Kan., will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 18, for household hazardous waste collection. It is south on 88th Street from K-32. All items brought to the site should be labeled or identified. There is a limit of 10 tires, with rims removed. Other items accepted include motor oil, batteries, antifreeze, degreasers, paints, varnishes, solvents, lawn and garden insecticides, pesticides, and household cleaning products. Other dates for collection will include May 16, June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17.
Community event designed to build trust between law enforcement and public
A community event designed to build trust between law enforcement and the community is planned at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the Donnelly College Community Event Center, north of the main tower, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. The program is sponsored by the FBI in partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s Office Western District of Missouri and District of Kansas; Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., police departments and the FBI Citizen’s Academy Alumni Association. There are two sessions, “Law Enforcement and the Community,” which will discuss building trust, what can be done and keeping the community safe; and “Civil Rights – Excessive Force – How matters are investigated and prosecuted.” The sessions begin at 6:05 p.m. and 6:55 p.m. The 45-minute sessions will be offered twice so everyone can attend each topic, according to a spokesman. The event will end with an overview and closing from 7:45 to 8:15 p.m. Each session will be moderated and participants are encouraged to email in questions in advance to [email protected]. Registration and refreshments will be from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Residents from both sides of the state line are being invited to this community event. Attendees will be limited to the first 150 guests who send in their reservations, because of space. Reservations should be made before April 17 to [email protected]. A welcome and opening presentation will be given by the Rev. John Miles of the Morning Star Missionary Church, Kansas City, Mo. Attendees will then have the opportunity to attend both of the breakout sessions.
Rosedale Retro Run planned
The Rosedale Retro Run, a 5k-fun run, will be held Saturday, May 9. There also will be a community trail work day and a mountain bike jam. There will be a finish line party at Fisher Park.
