Bishop Ward play scheduled Nov. 15
Bishop Ward High School’s Drama Club is presenting “The Life and Times of Princess Sophia” by Douglas Clinton. Sponsored by drama teacher Kelly Lipovitz, this comedy opened Nov. 13 with a full crowd and lots of laughs. The show will continue at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Willard L. Phillips Memorial Auditorium at the school, 708 N. 18th, Kansas City, Kan.
Piper plans to present musical Saturday
The musical “Grease” is scheduled to be performed Saturday at Piper High School by the Piper High School theater department. Admission is $5 for students and $7 for adults. There is one performance left, on Saturday, as other performances were held Wednesday through Friday. The performance is scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.
Entertainment bus tour planned Nov. 18
The Past, Present and Future Entertainment Bus Tour will leave at 8 a.m. Nov. 18 from the Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, and return at noon. The tour will cover entertainment sites in Wyandotte County. The cost of the tour is $20, and advance reservations are necessary to 913-573-5002. Those attending should arrive early.
ServSafe Course to be Nov. 18
A Food Handlers ServSafe Course will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the K-State Research and Extension Office, 1216 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kan. The class is for anyone who works in food service or is interested in food service employment. That includes day cares, schools, restaurants, casinos, nursing homes or anyone who handles any type of food service or group meals. KCKCC bone marrow registration drive to be Nov. 19
Kansas City Kansas Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is sponsoring a Bone Marrow Registration Drive Nov. 19 on the KCKCC Main Campus. This drive gives those individuals between the ages of 18-55 who are serious about wanting to save a life, a chance to register as a potential bone marrow donor. The registration drive is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Wed., Nov. 19, in Lower Jewell building on the campus, 7250 State Ave. The drive is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa.
Turkey Games to be Nov. 19 at KCKCC
The KCKCC Turkey Games will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Wellness and Fitness Center on the KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. The event is free and open to the public. Among the events at the Turkey Games are Pilgrim Broom Pushin,’ the Turkey Obstacle Course, Turkey Tossin’, Turkey Rollin’ Bowlin’, Pilgrim Sprintin’, Turkey Tailin’ and Turkey Shootin’. No actual turkeys will be used in the competition. Medicine balls will represent the turkeys. Registration for the 2014 Turkey Games can be completed at the Wellness Center front desk or by calling 913-288-7610. Registration can be completed until the start of the event.
Lung cancer program planned Nov. 19
Those who are affected by lung cancer, or at risk for it, may attend a free program, “Shine a Light on Lung Cancer,” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at the University of Kansas Cancer Center, Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Care Pavilion Atrium, 2330 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Westwood, Kan. Participants will learn about the latest advancements in lung cancer treatment while connecting with others and hearing stories of survival. AARP to meet a week early, Nov. 20
Because of the holiday, the Center City Chapter AARP No. 1544 will meet one week earlier at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Pat Hanlon Center, 11th and Ridge. The chapter will continue an in-depth review of local family caregiving alternatives, experiences with aging health issues and services led by Alma Clark and Betty Reynolds. Members will prepare a list of things they are grateful for in the annual Thankfulness tree ceremony and share holiday memories and preparations. New and potential members are encouraged to attend. Free Kansas City Jazz Orchestra concert to be Nov. 20 at KCKCC
As part of the second annual Bop in the Dotte, Kansas City, Kan., Public Library is holding a free concert by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra on Thursday, Nov. 20. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave. Before the concert, there will be a reception with punch and cookies in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. Strawberry Hill Museum to open for holidays Nov. 22
The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kan., will open for the holidays on Saturday, Nov. 22, and will remain open through Sunday, Jan. 26. The museum, decorated in Victorian style, is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with special tours available by appointment. The cost of a tour is $7 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. St. Nicholas will visit the museum from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. Nighttime tours will be available at 6 p.m. Fridays Nov. 28, Dec. 5 and Dec. 19, and reservations are required. The cost is $15 for the nighttime tours, which includes refreshments and dessert. Legends tree lighting ceremony to be Nov. 22
The Legends Outlets will hold the annual Legendary Lighting Ceremony at 7:45 p.m. Nov. 22 at the shopping center, I-70 and I-435, Kansas City, Kan. The historical Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 27 at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kan. Downtown KCK holiday lighting ceremony to be Dec. 5
Mayor Mark Holland’s Downtown Kansas City, Kan., Holiday Lighting Ceremony will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. just outside City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., KCK. The lighting will be at 7:15 p.m. Events include the tree lighting, holiday movies, crafts for children, and performances by choirs, bands and dance groups. Santa and Mrs. Claus will meet with children. Food vendors will be selling food and refreshments. Admission is free; concessions are available for purchase.
Christmas social event planned Dec. 9
The Leavenworth Road Association will hold a Christmas Social from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kan.
