Program offered to make Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls
Children and adults may decorate their own sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) during a program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, youth story time – craft room, 625 Minnesota Ave.
Design a Halloween candy jar
Adults and teens may design a Halloween candy jar during a program from 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 18 at the Turner Community Library, 831 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kan. The program is for ages 15 and up and is geared to adults. Hot glue is used in creating the candy jar using materials such as duct tape, ribbons, glass bowls and candle holders.
Museum plans Halloween History Howl on Saturday
The Wyandotte County Museum, 126th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs, is planning a Halloween History Howl from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The event is a family fall festival geared to children, said Jennifer Laughlin, museum curator. It will include pumpkin painting, a magic show, fire trucks and police cars, sheriff’s station children’s identification cards, Schlagle Library display, face painting and a balloon artist. Refreshments of cider and popcorn are included with the admission price of $5 for children ages 2-15. Adults are admitted free with their children. Also at the Wyandotte County Museum, the exhibit, “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Project,” will continue through Nov. 15. A Smithsonian traveling exhibit, it is the history of migrant workers.
KCKPS Marching Band Festival planned Oct. 18
Students are tuning up their instruments for a day of competition and fun. The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools will hold its annual Marching Band Festival at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Washington High School stadium. The annual festival features bands from the district’s high schools, including Washington, Wyandotte, Sumner Academy, Harmon, and Schlagle. Traditionally students and instructors focus their best performance energies on this festival, and the result is an afternoon of pageantry and sound. Tickets are $5 in advance (and may be purchased from any high school band director) or $7 at the gate.
Beer Fest at the Ballpark planned Oct. 18
Beer Fest at the Ballpark is planned from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the CommunityAmerica Ballpark, 1800 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Those attending may sample beers from 200 domestic, micro-brewed and international craft beers inside the concourse at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. There will be a disc jockey at the event. ‘Babes in Arms’ to be presented Oct. 18-19
“Babes in Arms,” a musical by Rodgers and Hart, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Reception planned for Romanian artist Oct. 21
A reception is planned for Romanian artist Larisa David on Oct. 21 at the Epic Arts, 611 N. 6th St., on Strawberry Hill in Kansas City, Kan. Workshop to discuss skills for job readiness
“Etiquette and Life Skills for Job Readiness and Success” is a workshop recommended for women seeking entry-level positions or women who have had a hard time keeping a job. Sponsors of the workshop said participants will leave better prepared for work and feeling much more confident in their ability to find and keep a job that matches their interest and skills. Trunk and treat event offered
The Eighth Street YMCA plans a Trunk and Treat event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at 900 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan. Activities will include a carnival, games, costume parade and a trunk and treat. It is free and open to the public.

Halloween Trunk or Treat to be Saturday
A Halloween Trunk or Treat event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds, 13700 Polfer Road, Kansas City, Kan. The event, sponsored by the Wyandotte County Fair Board, is a benefit for the Wyandotte County Fair Foundation 4-H Scholarships. The admission charge of $5 per child ages 2 and up will include hayride, trunk or treating, haunted petting zoo, games and a hot dog around the fire pits. The public is invited to the event. Family activities are geared to ages 3 to 15, and parents or adults should accompany the children. Volunteers including 4-H members and adults will be working at the trunk or treat. The fairgrounds location is east of K-7 on Polfer Road in northwest Wyandotte County.
Several local authors to appear at library event Oct. 25
Kansas City, Kan., Public Library will hold a Homegrown Reads local author fair on Oct. 25. This event, focusing on Kansas City area writers, will highlight both burgeoning, new talent and popular, established authors. Fans will be able to meet and talk with authors, listen to live readings, and purchase copies of books to have signed. Homegrown Reads feature dozens of local authors, including Fanny Alaadeen, Ruth Saucedo Campos, Angela Cervantes, Lisa Cindrich, Jay Sparks, Sarah Elizabeth, Terry W. Trick-or-treat at the library
