Grinter Sip ’N’ Shop to be Oct. 17
Grinter Place Friends will be hold its annual Sip ‘N’ Shop fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at 1400 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas. For the $5 admission fee, those attending will receive three tickets for wine tastings from Rowe Ridge Winery. There also will be giveaways. UG Commission to meet Oct. 17
The Unified Government Commission will meet at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The 5 p.m. meeting will be in the fifth floor meeting room, and the 7 p.m. regular meeting will be in the Commission Chambers, lobby level. On the agenda for the 5 p.m. meeting is a discussion on the UG long-range financial plan. Afterward there will be a closed executive session on the ninth floor about labor. Races are scheduled this weekend at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. The ARCA Menards Series will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18. Annual lineman’s rodeo to be Saturday at Ag Hall
The annual International Lineman’s Rodeo competition will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame near 126th and State Avenue in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Competition begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. Team and apprentice events will include the “hurtman rescue” and the “pole climb.” More than 1,000 participants from utilities throughout the nation and from other countries will test their skills in these events. There will be food and crafts vendors. Admission is free.
Candidates to speak at Democratic breakfast Saturday
Democratic candidates for local offices on the Nov. 5 general election ballot will be the speakers at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The breakfast buffet opens at 8:15 a.m., with the program starting at 9 a.m. Candidates who may participate are Democratic registered voters. They may bring signs and literature to distribute. Candidates for the Unified Government Commission will have 4 minutes and other candidates, 3 minutes, to speak. The program is open to all Democrats. The cost of the buffet is $10; students and those on limited income, $6. Those attending do not have to purchase a breakfast. A sponsor can pay the costs of students attending the breakfast for the first time.
Mobile mammograms to be offered
The Unified Government Public Health Department and Diagnostic Imaging Centers, P.A., will bring a mobile mammogram unit to the Bonner Springs City Library to provide services to women ages 40 and over from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs. Those under 40 may be eligible (ask the insurance provider) and those without insurance may also be eligible. Please bring an insurance card if you have one. Candidate forum planned Oct. 19
A candidate forum is planned on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Family Life Center of Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, 9301 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. There will be two sessions, one at 10 a.m. and one at 3 p.m. The first session will be a program with state representatives, and the second session will be a program with candidates. The event is free and open to the public. The forum is sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Mu Omega Chapter, in conjunction with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Jack and Jill of America, Johnson County Chapter, Kansas City, Kansas, Chapter of NAACP, Johnson County Chapter of NAACP and Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church, Civic Action Committee. A brief audience question-and-answer session, voter education information and time for refreshments is planned. According to a spokesman, the purpose of the forum is to give Kansas residents the opportunity to meet, greet, engage and hear from their current state representatives as well as candidates running for public office in the Nov. 5 general election. In the morning session, from 10 a.m. to noon, panelists who will participate include State Rep. Kathy Wolfe Moore, D-36th Dist., and State Rep. Pam Curtis, D-32nd Dist. The afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will include panelists Melissa Brune Bynum, incumbent candidate for Unified Government Commission, 1st District at large; David Haley, candidate for Board of Public Utilities, at large position 3; Rose Mulvany Henry, candidate for BPU, at large position 3; Robert Milan, incumbent candidate for BPU, 1st District; LaRon Thompson, candidate for BPU, 1st District; and Jeff Bryant, incumbent candidate for BPU, 3rd District.
KCKCC choirs to perform with Midwest Chamber Ensemble on Oct. 20
The Kansas City Kansas Community College Choral Department is preparing for its annual fall concert. The KCKCC Fall Choral Concert with the Midwest Chamber Ensemble is at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St. in Kansas City, Missouri. Open houses planned on stormwater fee changes in KCK
An open house on changes to stormwater fees in Kansas City, Kansas, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Joe E. Amayo Argentine Community Center, 2810 Metropolitan, Kansas City, Kansas. Other open houses also have been held on changes in the stormwater fees in Kansas City, Kansas. The Unified Government is continuing to study the change to the stormwater fee, and is seeking public comments. The current stormwater fee structure is to charge $4.50 per month to all users, without regard to the size of the property. The proposed stormwater fee charged more for larger properties. The new fee does not change the $4.50 monthly fee for the majority of residential property owners in Kansas City, Kansas, during the first year of the fee. The new fees are based on the size of hard surfaces on the property, which generates runoff. The other open house dates remaining include Nov. 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Beatrice L. Program to be presented on history of the Klan in KCK
A program, “Hidden History: The Ku Klux Klan KCKs,” will be presented from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28. The host of the program is CiviX, and it is being presented through a collaboration with “We the People of KCK,” the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library and the Reola Grant Center for Family Life Development. It will be presented at the upper Jewell building, Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Ave. Author Tim Rives will discuss his book, “The Ku Klux Klan of Kansas City, Kansas,” and will sign books. Chester Owens will introduce Rives, a historian. Rives’ book focuses on the revival of the Klan in 1921 in Kansas City, Kansas, and details the extent of its influence in the city over the ensuing decades. This meeting is free and open to the public. Candidates for public office have been invited to meet voters during this event.
Library plans concert and lecture about Scott Joplin on Nov. 9
Michael Dolman, Kansas City, Kansas, native and San Francisco resident, will present a concert and lecture demonstration of Scott Joplin’s piano works at 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Scott Joplin was known as the king of ragtime. During his brief career, he wrote 44 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his earliest and most popular pieces, the “Maple Leaf Rag,” became ragtime’s first and most influential hit, and has been recognized as the archetypal rag. The piano works of Joplin are considered the American equivalent of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Inventions and Sinfonias” for keyboard.
