Alcott to hold Halloween event
The Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., is preparing for its annual Halloween event at the Alcott from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. The theme this year is the “Wizard of Oz.” The Alcott parking lot on Oct. 31 will be decorated with scenes from the “Wizard of Oz.” Visitors will walk through the gates and follow a yellow brick road. Artist Darryl Woods will be there and will have posters for children to select. Also, Sheryl Nance-Durst will volunteer her time to do face-painting. The Unified Government’s lead paint program will hand out information about the lead paint program. Children will receive a bag of candy at the event. Sponsors, partners and donors are needed for the Halloween program. Candy may be donated, and money will be accepted for the event’s expenses. Volunteers are also needed. Library plans Dia de los Muertos event Nov. 2
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library will hold a Dia de los Muertos celebration on Nov. 2, with live music, a dance performance and a book giveaway. The event will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 2 at the South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The Pablo Sanhueza Latin Jazz Band will perform, and the Los Bailadores de Ballet Folklorico de Kansas City will dance. Art and history exhibits will be on display. There will be a full-size altar on display, and also at the event will be a photo booth. Those attending may make crafts and taste traditional foods. Also, items related to Latino and Hispanic art and culture will be available for check-out from the library. The first 100 adults to arrive will receive a copy of Sonia Sotomayor’s book, “My Beloved World,” and the first 100 children to arrive will receive a copy of Sotomayor’s “Turn Pages: My Life Story,” a children’s book available in English and Spanish. Books and food are limited and will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Texas Humanities, a state affiliates of the National Endowment for the Humanities, has loaned the exhibit, “Voces Americanas: Latino Literature in the United States,” to the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library for this celebration.
