Medicare open enrollment assistance event to be Oct. 23
A Medicare open enrollment assistance event sponsored by Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., is planned for 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event will provide help to seniors during the Medicare open enrollment period. Trained volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program will be on hand at the event to provide one-on-one assistance to seniors who have questions, or who wish to make changes to their plans. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period extends from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries who wish to make changes or enroll for the first time need to bring their Medicare card, any current prescriptions (including dosage and frequency), and a list of preferred pharmacies. The event is free and open to everyone. For those unable to attend the event on Oct. 23, another open enrollment assistance event is planned from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Johnson County Central Resource Library, 9875 W. 87th St., Overland Park, Kansas. Blood drive planned Oct. 24
An American Red Cross blood drive is planned on Oct. 24 at Donnelly College, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The blood drive will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. According to a spokesman for the Red Cross, donors of all blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this fall, especially after Hurricane Florence and subsequent flooding forced the cancellation of more than 6,000 blood and platelet donations last month. Vaughan to speak about book Oct. 27
Kansas City area author and historian Joe H. Vaughan will be speaking and signing books at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in the café at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Vaughan has released a new history book entitled, “Colonel Wilkinson’s Diary, A Kansas Doctor in World War I”. Colonel Hugh Wilkinson, M. D., was born and raised in Seneca, Kansas. The doctor was a Kansas City, Kansas, surgeon whose offices were in the Brotherhood Building on Minnesota Avenue.

Alcott to hold Halloween event
The Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., is preparing for its annual Halloween event at the Alcott from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. The theme this year is the “Wizard of Oz.” The Alcott parking lot on Oct. 31 will be decorated with scenes from the “Wizard of Oz.” Visitors will walk through the gates and follow a yellow brick road. Artist Darryl Woods will be there and will have posters for children to select. Also, Sheryl Nance-Durst will volunteer her time to do face-painting. The Unified Government’s lead paint program will hand out information about the lead paint program. Children will receive a bag of candy at the event. Veterans Day Commemoration event to be Nov. 10
The annual Wyandotte County Veterans Day Commemoration event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Village, 6723 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The guest speaker will be Retired Sgt. First Class Gretchen Meitler, a veteran of the Iraq war and member of Tonganoxie VFW Post 9271. The Piper High School Music in Motion will perform. A brunch will be served. This year’s program will recognize current era veterans, with a special acknowledgment of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
