Renaissance Festival continues
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival continues on weekends through Oct. 14 at the festival grounds at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. The festival is a celebration of medieval life, with such activities as jousting, contests, a royal parade, music, entertainment and food. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $22.95 per adult, $13.95 for children 5-12, $20.25 for seniors and students, and free for children 4 and younger. Friends of Yates plans annual fundraising event Oct. 7
Friends of Yates will hold its fourth annual Evening of Praise, “Friends Embracing Lives through Praise,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7. Vaughan to speak
Kansas City area author and historian Joe H. Vaughan will be speaking at the Downtown Kansas City, Kansas, Kiwanis Club at noon Thursday, Oct. 11. Downtown Kiwanis meets in the conference room of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Offices at 755 Minnesota Ave. At 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, Vaughan will be presenting and signing books at the monthly Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas, “Adventures in Learning” group at Grace Lutheran Church, 3333 Wood Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Vaughan has released a new history book entitled, “Colonel Wilkinson’s Diary, A Kansas Doctor in World War I.” Colonel Hugh Wilkinson, M. D., was born and raised in Seneca, Kansas. The doctor was a Kansas City, Kansas, surgeon whose offices were in the Brotherhood Building on Minnesota Avenue. He volunteered for service in the “Great War” and kept a diary of his tour of duty. Wilkinson served at Walter Reed Army Hospital, in France and was discharged with the rank of colonel. He resumed his surgical practice in Kansas City, Kansas. Vaughan is the late colonel’s grandson. The two men never met. Dr. Wilkinson died some two decades before author and historian Vaughan was born. This is the final year of four years of activities to commemorate 100 years since World War 1 occurred between 1914 and 1918.

Program planned Oct. 16 on immigration legislation
A program is planned Oct. 16 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library on immigration legislation. The program, “Climate of Fear: Pending Immigration Legislation, DACA and ICE,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. To be discussed are pending immigration legislation in the United States and legislative trends in other countries that deal with refugees, as well as facts about U.S. immigration policies and proposed changes. Blood drive planned Oct. 24
An American Red Cross blood drive is planned on Oct. 24 at Donnelly College, 608 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The blood drive will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. According to a spokesman for the Red Cross, donors of all blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this fall, especially after Hurricane Florence and subsequent flooding forced the cancellation of more than 6,000 blood and platelet donations last month.
