UG Commission to meet May 31
On Thursday, May 31, the Unified Government Commission will meet at 6 p.m. in a special session in the fifth floor meeting room, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas, to discuss a planning and zoning code rewrite. At 7 p.m. May 31, a UG Commission meeting is scheduled at the Commission Chamber, lobby level, City Hall. Planning and zoning items will be on the agenda.

Turner fishing derby to be June 2
The annual kids’ fishing derby will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 2, at Pierson Park Lake, Shelter No. 2, Douglas and South 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. There will be age divisions for ages 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15. Registration is at 8 a.m., fishing begins at 8:30 a.m., weigh-ins will be at 11 a.m. and prizes are awarded at noon. Summer reading program begins June 2 at Bonner Springs Library
The Bonner Springs City Library’s Summer Reading Program kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, with the Kansas City Symphony’s Instrument Petting Zoo. The program will be at the Bonner Springs Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave. The reading program runs through the end of July. The theme this year is music–Rock & Read!–with programs and prizes for reading. Those participating in the program will read books to earn prizes including T-shirts, guitars, earbuds and books. Bert Cantwell memorial interchange to be dedicated Sunday
The interchange at 110th and I-70 will be dedicated in a ceremony June 3 in honor of Cantwell’s contributions to the state and the nation. Cantwell, who died in 1996, was the former sheriff of Wyandotte County, also was superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol and was a U.S. Marshal. He also served in community leadership positions with the Kansas City, Kansas, Area Chamber of Commerce. The Bert Cantwell memorial interchange signs were funded by the family and donors, and will be unveiled at the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, June 3, at the interchange. Parking will be available on 110th Street, south of I-70.
State of the Unified Government address to be June 5
Mayor David Alvey plans to give the State of the Government address at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, at the Reardon Convention Center, 500 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The KCK Downtown Rotary Club is the host of the program. After a buffet luncheon at 11:30 a.m., the speech is scheduled at noon. Mindfulness and meditation program begins June 6
A mindfulness and meditation program will begin at noon June 6 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. The class will be held each Wednesday. The 30-minute class will cover simple mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and improve well-being. Some persons have said meditation reduces stress, improves attention, energy and empathy for others. A different meditative technique will be introduced each week, with readings and dialogue. Beginners or those who are experienced at meditation may attend. Chairs are provided, and those attending may bring their own meditation cushions.
Movies in the parks program begins June 8
Movies in the parks are planned this summer through the Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department. The free movies will begin at 8 p.m. on these dates: June 8, “Ferdinand” at Heathwood Park, July 13, “The Star” at Rosedale Park; and Aug. 3, “Jumanji” at Kaw Point Park. Those attending may bring a blanket or a lawn chair.
Annual kids fishing derby to be June 9 at Wyandotte County Lake
The Ed and Ione Trapp Annual Derby will take place on Saturday, June 9, at Wyandotte County Lake at the Kids Pond, 91st and Leavenworth Road. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. followed by derby fishing from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and a trophy presentation at 10:30 a.m. Participants should bring their fishing gear. Worms for bait will be provided. A free hot dog coupon will be given to the kids who register. The event is sponsored by the Leavenworth Road Association and Wyandotte County Parks.
