Women’s role in Civil War to be discussed March 18
A program about women who served in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at the George Meyn Community Center, 126th and State Avenue, inside Wyandotte County Park, Bonner Springs. The program is sponsored by the Wyandotte County Historical Society. The Kansas Humanities Council is sponsoring it in part. The program is free and open to the public. Free seminars planned March 19 on BPU solar farm
The Board of Public Utilities will present an informational program on its community solar farm March 19 in the auditorium of the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. Two sessions will be offered, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The program will cover how the community solar farm works, the costs, utility bill credits and how residents can access solar energy while avoid installation and maintenance costs. KCK schools to hold public ‘listening tour’ March 19
Members of the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education will meet the district’s parents, students and community in a public listening tour. The board will listen to what is important to parents, students and the community concerning the Kansas City, Kansas, Public School district. The listening tours will be a chance for the board to hear first-hand about important opportunities that could help inform future board priorities, a spokesman said. It also gives parents, students and the community a chance to meet new members of the board. Remaining listening tour dates include:

‘Church of Spies: The Pope’s Secret War Against Hitler’ book discussion planned
An adult book discussion, “Church of Spies: The Pope’s Secret War Against Hitler,” will be presented at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Poet event canceled
An event with the Kansas poet laureate, Kevin Rabas, scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at the Bonner Springs City Library has been canceled. Rabas was in New York when a storm hit, causing delays. The library plans to reschedule the program.

Main KCK Public Library to record Quindaro oral histories
Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library are inviting people who have memories of Quindaro to share them during an oral history session Saturday, March 24, at the Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave, Kansas City, Kansas. This session of the Quindaro Oral History Project, the third in the series, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24. Interviews will be recorded in the first floor meeting rooms at the Main Library. The Quindaro Oral History Project grew out of Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, working toward National Historic Landmark status with the National Park Service for the Quindaro neighborhood. Quindaro Oral History Project sessions are recorded and transcribed for the library, and will be available for research, as well as preserving the memories and history of the families that called the neighborhood home.

Book sale to be March 27-29

Author to speak March 27 at library
Lewis Diuguid, author of “Our Fathers: Making Black Men,” will speak at the Next Chapter Kansas City Forum at 6 p.m. March 27 at the West Wyandotte Branch of the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. Diuguid, a St. Louis native, worked for the Kansas City Star from 1977 through 2016. He will speak about his book and present suggestions for writing a memoir. His book, published in 2017, received the Philip C. Chinn Book Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education at its international conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Jazz cabaret to be April 12
The Kansas City Kansas Community College Jazz Cabaret is at 6 p.m. April 12 in Upper Jewell on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Tickets are $25 and $15 for children. Tickets are $10 after 7:30 p.m. Children 10 years old and younger are free. The cabaret will feature the KCKCC Blue Devil Jazz Ensemble (directed by Jim Mair), the KCKCC Latin Jazz Ensemble (directed by Justin Binek), the college’s three vocal jazz ensembles (Vocal Lab, Fusion and The Standard, all directed by John Stafford) and the KC Latin All-Stars, who will be playing at 7:30 p.m. The first half of the show will feature the student ensembles in performance with a catered taco dinner and drink options of beer, wine or non-alcoholic cocktails. The second half of the production will feature the KC Latin All-Stars who will provide music for everyone to dance.
