Armistice Day to be topic of historical society presentation Sunday, Nov. 19
Guest speaker for the quarterly meeting of the Wyandotte County Historical Society and Museum at 2 p.m. Nov. 19 will be Jonathan Casey, archivist from the Liberty Memorial World War I Museum. He will speak about Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918, when an armistice was signed ending the hostilities on the western front of World War I. Also known as Veterans Day or Remembrance Day, the date was made a national holiday and events and traditions have grown around it. The meeting is free and open to the public. There will be refreshments.

Keeler to benefit from shopping Nov. 19

The Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., will receive 15 percent of purchases from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Ten Thousand Villages, 7947 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas. Shoppers may meet and talk with Keeler Women’s staff and volunteers at the event.

Blood drive scheduled Nov. 20

Blood drive scheduled Nov. 22

Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance to be Nov. 23 at Armory
Muddy Waters Jr., the oldest son of Muddy Waters, will headline the Thanksgiving Breakfast Dance Nov. 23 at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th and Ridge, Kansas City, Kansas. Waters Jr., also known as Mud Morganfield, will perform his father’s greatest hits at the event. Other highlights will include the son of Johnnie Taylor, T.J. Hooker-Taylor, performing his dad’s greatest hits. In addition, guitarist Memphis Mike, a local blues artist, will perform. Levee Town, a blues and rockabilly group, is returning to the event after about 10 years. Doors open at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day with four hours of blues and jazz entertainment planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Breakfast, music and dance are included in the event. Downtown Holiday Lighting Festival to be Dec. 1
The mayor’s Downtown Holiday Lighting Festival will take place from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in front of Kansas City, Kansas, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event includes the tree lighting ceremony, a visit with Santa Claus, crafts and games for kids, holiday movies and popcorn, performances by choirs, bands and dance groups, and goodie bags for the first 1,000 children. Santa Express to start Dec. 2 at Ag Hall
The Santa Express will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 2 and 3, and Dec. 9 and 10, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, Bonner Springs. Children may visit Santa I the depot, ride on the train, work on crafts, and have cookies and hot cocoa. Donations will benefit Farm Town restoration. Grinter Place to hold holiday events Dec. 2
Grinter Place is planning holiday events, Breakfast with Santa and Holiday with the Arts, on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the historic site at 78th and K-32 in Kansas City, Kansas. The Grinter barn, 1400 S. 78th St., will be the site of a Breakfast with Santa event from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 2. The breakfast will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 2, while lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost for breakfast ranges from $3 to $7, while the cost of lunch will be $3. Children may have their pictures taken with Santa, receive a goodie bag and work on holiday crafts. They will receive their photos with Santa at the event. The Holiday with the Arts event will include visiting with artists and authors, and listening to music. There will be books, paintings and pictures available for purchase. There also will be a wine tasting from Rowe Ridge with cheese and crackers, she said. Tours of the Grinter House will be available. The event includes a portrayal of Moses Grinter by Bill Nicks, Grinter House curator, from 3 to 4 p.m. The Zane sisters will show and demonstrate beading during the event. Tickets for Holiday with the Arts are $6 per person or $10 for two persons. All funds raised through the event will go toward Grinter Place. Breakfast with St. Nick planned Dec. 2 at Strawberry Hill Museum
A Breakfast with St. Nicholas is planned from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 2 at the Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th, Kansas City, Kansas. The cost of breakfast, a visit with St. Nicholas and a picture will be $10. The visit with St. Nicholas and picture only will cost $5. An adult breakfast will be available for $6. Friends of Yates’ annual benefit gala to be Dec. 9
Friends of Yates will celebrate 104 years of service by holding the “Holiday At The Apollo” annual meeting and Benefit Gala at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 9 at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, 520 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. This year’s event will showcase the many programs and services that attribute to the continued success of Friends of Yates, according to a spokesman. The Strawberry Hill Museum, 720 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kansas, has reopened after being closed for holiday decorating for an “Olde World Christmas.” The museum is open for tours from noon to 4:15 p.m. on the weekends.
