Candidate fundraiser planned June 5
A fundraiser for Mike Kane, running for re-election to the 5th District, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 5, at the Due West Ranch, 134th and Donahoo Road, Kansas City, Kansas. The fundraiser will include a meet-and-greet with the candidate.

BPU to meet Wednesday
The Board of Public Utilities plans to meet Wednesday, June 7, for a work session at the BPu offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. On the agenda for the work session at 5 p.m. are a board update, general manager update, lobby renovations and tour, and a billing explanation. The regular BPU meeting begins at 6 p.m. On the agenda are a visitors’ time, Cimarron Bend update, April financial report, board comments and general manager comments.

Civitan group to meet June 7
The Lancaster-Melton Peace Keepers Civitan Club will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at the Dotte Spot, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. The club’s purpose is to establish an environment of service and caring in the Kansas City, Kansas, community, support Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department officers, as well as local veterans and their families. The public is invited to attend the meeting. Civitan is an international nonprofit service organization.

Fairfax group to meet June 8
The Fairfax Industrial Association will meet for lunch at 11:15 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at CertainTeed, 3000 Chrysler Road, Kansas City, Kansas. The guest speaker will be Diane O’Bryne of Competitive Resources, on the topic, “Speaking the 4 Languages of Business.” The cost of the lunch is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Leavenworth Road fishing derby to be June 10
The Leavenworth Road Association’s annual Kids Free Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 10, at Wyandotte County Lake kids’ pond. The fishing derby is open to children from 3 to 15 years old. Nine free concerts to be offered this summer at Legends Outlets
The Legends Outlets will continue its free outdoor concert series, Legends Live, on Saturday evenings this summer. Some of the performers will be local bands. The concert series will include nine performances from 5 to 7 p.m. June 10 through Aug. 5 at the Civic Courtyard Fountain at The Legends Outlets, according to a spokesman. A range of styles, including popular music, classic rock, rock alternative, rhythm and blues, country hits and selections from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and today will be featured. The concert series will end Aug. 5 with a family friendly performance tied to Legends Outlets’ Back-to-School event featuring children’s music, giveaways and activities. The Legends concerts are held near the fountain, near the Legends 14 Theatre, at 1843 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. The Legends Live concert schedule includes:
June 10: Red Guitar: Transcendent melodic rock and alternative band with rich vocal harmonies covering music from the 1990s to now.
June 17: J Love Band: Energetic funk and blues band playing classic soul, jazz and R&B music from legendary artists.
June 24: Run With It: Powerhouse trio built on a foundation of funk playing pop-rock hits from the 1980s to now.
July 1: The Zeros: Kansas City’s premier 1980s tribute band playing new wave hit songs.
July 8: Rusty Laffoon: Soulful country band with high energy and strong vocals covering favorite country rock hits.
July 15: Perpetual Change: Rock band playing hits from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, as well as a few original songs.
July 22: Rattle and Hum: Kansas City’s premier U2 tribute band covering hits from the 1980s to current.
July 29: Big Time Grain Company: Kansas City’s premier country western and country rock band performing crowd favorites from many artists.
Aug. 5: Mr. Stinky Feet and The Hiccups (family night): Award-winning kid rocker Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” and his band, The Hiccups, performing popular children’s music.

Public hearing planned June 12 on inmate re-entry housing location
A public hearing is scheduled Monday, June 12, on a special use permit for a federal residential re-entry program housing 85 persons in transitional housing at 925 Sunshine Road in the Fairfax area of Kansas City, Kansas. The hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. June 12 before the City Planning Commission at the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Mental health first-aid courses offered June 13-14 and 15-16
Training to identify and help someone experiencing a mental health crisis will be held June 13-14 and June 15-16 at the Public School Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kan. The Mental Health First-Aid courses are offered by Wyandot Center, a Wyandotte County-based nonprofit providing mental health services to children and adults. Courses will show how to recognize symptoms of mental illness, including depression, anxiety, trauma, talk of suicide, psychosis and substance abuse. Training includes a five-step plan to help someone developing a mental health concern. The youth version course will be held June 14-14. The adult version is June 15-16. Continuing education credits are available to health care professionals. There is a $50 training fee per person. Scholarships are available. The course can be used to become certified as a Mental Health First Aider. One in 10 in Wyandotte County has a serious mental illness (SMI), according to the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City. About 40 percent of these cases go untreated. Untreated SMI is associated with seven suicides, 1,100 incarcerations and 1,500 unemployed adults annually in the county, foundation research shows. Leavenworth Road Association to meet June 13
The Leavenworth Road Association will meet at 6 p.m. June 13 at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kansas, for dinner and a meeting. Chicken wings will be the main dish supplied at the potluck dinner. Those attending will bring a side dish. The guest speaker will be Mike Connor, former director of the Wyandotte County parks and recreation. He is retired, and will present his research about the history of Wyandotte County Lake.

Mayor to speak at Women’s Chamber meeting
Mayor Mark Holland is the guest speaker at the Kansas City, Kansas, Women’s Chamber of Commerce membership meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St. He will talk about current politics, and also about news from the Unified Government.
