Free tax preparation assistance offered at KCKCC
Kansas City Kansas Community College is working with NextStep KC and the United Way of Greater Kansas City to provide free federal and state income tax preparation for qualified individuals. The service, which started Feb. 1, is available to taxpayers with incomes of less than $54,000. Those who qualify should go to Room 3632 in the Flint Building on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave. at the following times:
• 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays (with the exception of March 15)
• 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays (with the exception of March 18)
• 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays (during February and on April 15 only)
The preparation is a joint venture between students in KCKCC’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and NextStep KC., a community-based nonprofit that works to provide affordable financial services to low and moderate income families. Tax assistance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines form in advance, so arrive early, as spots will likely be full as soon as the assistance time opens. Please do not email or call the location. Walk-in clients only. The free tax preparation service is only available for federal returns as well as Kansas and Missouri state returns. It is not available for Schedule E (rental or royalty income), Schedule F (farm income) or estate and trust returns. Only 2016 returns will be prepared in February. Civitan Club plans meeting April 12
A new Civitan Club in Kansas City, Kansas, plans to meet at 6 p.m. April 12 at The Dotte Spot, 8123 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. The new club, the Lancaster-Melton Peace Keepers Civitan Club, is named in honor of the memory of Detective Brad Lancaster and Capt. Robert Melton of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. The club also honors the memory of other officers who have served in the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, as well as current officers in this and other agencies in the metropolitan area. The club also welcomes people who have a “pay it forward” outlook on community service. The Lancaster-Melton Peace Keepers Civitan Club is sponsored by the Lawrence ACTION Civitan Club. A spokesman said the club’s main objectives are to keep the two officers’ memory alive by working together on projects that improve the community, increase the knowledge and support of law enforcement officers in the community, as well as supporting positive efforts to help make the community a better place to live, work, and play. Civitan Club membership is open to all community members who are at least 18 years old and of good character. Diversity forum planned April 12 in Bonner Springs
A diversity forum will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 12 in the Bonner Springs High School cafeteria, 100 McDanield. The event is a project of the Bonner Springs High School students in the Diversity Leadership Team and in conjunction with the Bonner Springs NAACP. The title of the forum is “Unapologetically Different.” The forum is open to the public.

Library to hold Heritage Festival April 15
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library is holding a Wyandotte County Heritage Festival from noon to 3 p.m. April 15. Events will be held at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St. This multi-generational event, designed for all ages, is in partnership with Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and the Kansas Humanities Council. Children will enjoy a goat cart ride around the lawn, while the entire family visits with over a dozen local organizations that will entertain and educate them about Kansas and Wyandotte County’s rich history. At 2 p.m., Angela Bates, executive director of the Nicodemus Historical Society, will tell the story of Nicodemus, Kansas, the only remaining western community established by African-Americans during the reconstruction period after the Civil War. Annual quilt show to be April 28 at Grinter
The Quilters at Grinter Barn, 1400 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas, are holding their annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 28, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Barbara J. Eikmeier will be the guest speaker at a program at 1 p.m. Saturday. She is a well-known pattern and fabric designer who will present a trunk show and a look into how she started her line of fabrics. Admission to hear Eikmeier is $3 for adults and $1 for students. Children 5 and younger are free. Admission to the quilt show is free. Anyone who would like to enter a quilt in the show, or who has a quilt that needs to be finished, may stop in from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays at the basement of the Grinter Barn and talk to the quilters.
Young Child Fair planned April 29 at Bonner library
The seventh annual Young Child Fair, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, has a theme this year of “Books, Blocks, Bubbles and Barks.” There will be activities throughout the library, including Marshall and Chase from Paw Patrol; a show at 11 a.m. by the KC Disc Dogs; and reading to a therapy dog. In addition, the Young Child Fair includes an opportunity to play with blocks to learn about science and math; make and enjoy a snack; a special puppy storytime with guest readers; a free book; and the opportunity for families to receive information from local agencies. The event for families with young children is co-sponsored with the Bonner Springs-Edwardsville Public Schools Parents as Teachers. The program is free and open to the public.
