Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration planned Monday in KCK
The Rev. Jimmy Brown of St. Louis, Mo., will be the guest speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration Monday, Jan. 16, at the Reardon Center, 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. Dr. Brown has served as pastor of St. Luke Memorial Missionary Baptist Church for 40 years, and has been president of the Missionary Baptist Church State Convention of Missouri for 10 years, from 2006 to 2016. The celebration is open to the public. The King Day celebration begins with a motorcade for hunger that will assemble at 9 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 4th and Richmond, and will start at 10 a.m., ending at the Reardon Center. People are asked to bring food donations that will be donated to the poor. The program begins at 10:45 a.m. with Praise Dancers from area churches, followed by the program at 11 a.m. with music. A Mass Gospel Choir will perform, and scholarships will be presented.
Keeler Center to be closed for MLK Day

Sportscaster to discuss book Jan. 19
Kansas City sportscaster Danny Clinkscale, from WHB radio, will discuss his book, “Leaving Cancer for the Circus,” at a program at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. The book is about facing cancer and surgery in the same year while covering two World Series and going on a journey through the Midwest.
Eagle Days to be Jan. 21-22 at Wyandotte County Lake
The annual Eagle Days event will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, and Sunday, Jan. 22, at Wyandotte County Lake Park in Kansas City, Kan. The host of the annual event is the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library at the lake park at 91st and Leavenworth Road. The 16th annual event will include opportunities to view eagles and other waterfowl, according to a spokesman. Both indoor viewing and possibly outdoor viewing will be available. A free family event, Eagle Days programs will be at the Schlagle Library and the James P. Davis Hall at Wyandotte County Lake Park. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Schlagle Library; noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the vis Hall, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Davis Hall. Weekend activities will include an arts and craft area for kids, and live bird demonstrations by Operation Wildlife featuring a variety of eagles, falcons, hawks and owls. Outdoor volunteers will help visitors with spotting scopes set up at lake sites near areas where eagles are known to visit. The event is sponsored by the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities; Operation Wildlife; the Kansas City, Kan., Public Library; Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools; and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City Kan., Parks and Recreation Department. Raising Safe Kids program offered

The Master Food Volunteer Training Program will start Feb. 15. This program allows people with interests in food, cooking, and nutrition to take their expertise to a higher level while developing new avenues for helping in the community. “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” an 8-week exercise program for older adults, will be offered beginning April 4. The program targets strength, balance and flexibility.
