KCKCC play to be presented Oct. 13-16
“The Addams Family: The Musical” will be presented by Kansas City Kansas Community College theater students from Oct. 13-16. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13, 14 and 15 at the Performing Arts Center. There is also a matinee at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. The musical is under the direction of Charles Leader with musical direction by Lenora Remmert. Choreography by Michael Joy and Paula Lang.

Kansas Speedway races scheduled Oct. 14-16
Tickets are currently on sale for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Hollywood Casino 400 at 1:15 p.. Oct. 16 at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. The Kansas Lottery 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series race will take center stage at 2 p.m. Oct. 15, while the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards championship race will run at night Oct. 14. Medicare open enrollment event to be Oct. 17
U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., will be the host of two Medicare open enrollment assistance events in October. The events will help provide information for seniors during the Medicare open enrollment period, a spokesman said. The first event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 17, at Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The second event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Shawnee Town Hall. Trained volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program will be on hand at the event to provide one-on-one assistance to seniors who have questions, or who wish to make changes to their plans. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period extends from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Medicare beneficiaries who wish to make changes or enroll for the first time need to bring their Medicare card, any current prescriptions (including dosage and frequency), and a list of preferred pharmacies. Business West, Community College to sponsor Candidates’ Forum Oct. 17
Business West, along with other neighborhood associations in Wyandotte County and the Kansas City Kansas Community College, will sponsor a Candidate’s Forum from 6 p.m. until 8:05 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the Upper Jewell Building at KCKCC, 7250 State Ave. The forum will be taped for playback on the college’s Community Access Channel 17. The format: Each candidate will have two minutes for introductory remarks. A panel of newspaper editors and neighborhood leaders will ask questions of each candidate. Candidates will have one minute to respond to each question. The panel will have the opportunity to ask follow-up questions. Each candidate will have one minute to make closing remarks. This will not be a debate. Representatives will be allowed to speak for candidates who are not able to attend. However, these representatives will only be able to make opening and closing remarks.

Used book sale to be Oct. 18-20 at KCKCC
The My Shelf to Yours Book Sale will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 18 and 20 in Room 2325 on the lower level of the Jewell Building on the Kansas City Kansas Community College campus, 7250 State Ave. It will also be open 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 19. The sale is open to the public as well as students, staff and faculty. All books will be $1 or seven books for $5, and proceeds benefit the student scholarship fund. The KCKCC Intercultural Center uses the fund to distribute scholarships for textbooks and tuition to students who have a financial need.

BPU to meet Oct. 19
The Board of Public Utilities will meet Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the board offices at 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The work session will begin at 5 p.m. On the agenda is a board update, general manager update, and fuel and purchase power report. The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. On the agenda are a visitors’ time, an electric production update, board comments and general manager comments. The meetings are open to the public.

Cowboy poet and folklorist to speak Oct. 19 at Bonner Springs Library
Jim Hoy, cowboy poet and folklorist, will be featured at a program Oct. 19 at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. He will discuss “Kansas Legends and Folktales” in a program sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council. Exaggerated narratives and tall tales, such as stories about grasshoppers so big that cowboys could ride them, help people understand the character of the state and its people, according to the author. Hoy will appear at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Bonner Springs City Library. The program is free and open to the public.

Community forums planned on KCKPS bond issue

Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools is sponsoring community forums at Kansas City, Kan., Public Library branches to discuss the new proposed no-tax increase bond referendum, which will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. Remaining forums:
• Oct. 20, Main Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., 6 p.m.
This bond referendum will allow the district to make improvements to every school, and build four new ones, all with no increase in taxes for community residents, a spokesman said. The public is invited to attend a forum to learn more about the bond issue.

Grinter Place to hold Campfire Chat Oct. 22
The Grinter Place Campfire Chat will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the historic home, 1420 S. 78th St., Kansas City, Kan. The program will be a historical reenactment presentation about Octave Chanute, who built the Hannibal Bridge, designed Kansas City stockyards, platted Lenexa, mentored the Wright Brothers and is the namesake of Chanute, Kan. There will be hot dogs, smores and tours of the Grinter House, an 1857 home that is a state museum. The event sponsor is the Grinter Place Friends. It will be an educational event open to all ages.

Dialogue on reducing violence in community to be Oct. 25
A dialogue on reducing community violence will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Harmon High School, 2400 Steele Road, Kansas City, Kan. Sponsored by the Mayor’s Clergy Roundtable, four dialogues will place those who attend into groups of 10 to 15 people, with a facilitator assigned to lead the dialogue. It is a follow-up to the community forum held Sept. 20 to start a dialogue on ideas for reducing violence in Kansas City, Kan. Registration for the dialogue will begin at 6 p.m. The discussions will continue on how the community and law enforcement can work together to make Kansas City, Kan., a safer place to live. The dialogues are open to the public. Dialogues are scheduled Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Sumner Academy, 1610 N. 8th St., Kansas City, Kan.; and at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Patricia Diane Kane Community Center (at the Piper district complex), 3130 N. 122nd St., Kansas City, Kan.

Third District Job Fair to be Oct. 27
U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-3rd Dist., has announced that the Third District Job Fair will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Burke Technical Education Center, 6565 State Ave. The job fair will facilitate face-to-face meetings between those seeking employment and local employers who are currently hiring. The job fair includes a special morning hour exclusively for veterans. The hours of the job fair are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27. The 9 to 10 a.m. hour is open exclusively to veterans. Job seekers are advised to dress as if they’re going to a job interview and bring several copies of their resume. There is no registration or fee required to attend. Boo Bash Halloween Party to be Oct. 29
The 4th Annual Boo Bash Halloween Party will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton Ave., Bonner Springs. The party is on a bigger scale this year with events throughout the library. Events include a live disc jockey playing terrifying tunes, scary stories by the fireplace, pumpkin decorating, a storywalk outside the library, and candy. Those attending may wear their costumes.

BPU to hold energy efficiency workshop Nov. 1
The Board of Public Utilities will hold a free Energy Efficiency Workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The event will demonstrate easy and effective weatherization and energy efficiency strategies to help consumers save electricity, water and money in their homes. The workshop will be held at the West Wyandotte Public Library, 1737 N.82nd St., Kansas City, Kan. Two sessions will be available, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is limited. Chamber plans showcase event Nov. 2
The Kansas City, Kan., Area Chamber of Commerce plans the Best of KCK and Wyandotte County from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, Kan.
